Just got done installing some SCN's on my tele and it's f'n awesome. Thanks again to martian for the help.

Anyway, now it's time for the Bigsby. I've got a 1996 MIM tele and have run into a problem. The mounting holes from the stock bridge plate and the new bigsby plate don't match up. The bisgby holes are closer together, and when I do a mock up, it looks like i'll be drilling the new holes really close to the original ones.

Is this gonna be a problem? Should I fill the original holes and just drill the new ones? Or should I just abort the whole mission and leave it to a professional?

I think theres a problem waiting to happen. The old holes could be filled but i think the bridge would still move over time. I'd take it to a repairman and see what they think though.

I would contact Bigsby. I seem to remember an adapter plate for Tele's.

I saw an adapter plate from a link on bigsbys website, but it's for a tune-o-matic. If it helps, the bigsby model I purchased is the B5.

And the screw holes don't match up?

Contact Bigsby.

I contacted bigsby through their website and am awaiting a reply. In the meantime I'll take it to my nearest authorized fender tech to see what can be done. I don't want to do anything drastic as this tele is my first guitar, and my baby at that.

If anything can be done to do the install without any life threatening problems then I'll be sure to let y'all know.

thanks for the help!!

I seem to remember reading an old article by Dan Earliwine about this subject, or one very similar dealing with tuner mounting holes that do not match up. I believe he used hardwood toothpicks, glued into the old holes before drilling the new holes. I will try to tind the old article and let you know. Meanwhile you may try one of Dan's excellent repair books for this soloution.

But this is about the 3 bridge plate mounting holes. Tooth picks won't fit.

I do have the Guitar Player Repair Guide which Erlewine wrote, and have read the article on filling the tuning machine holes to mount new ones. I just really scared to fill the bridge plate holes because the new ones will be extremely close to the originals. Like CAFeathers said, it's a problem waiting to happen.

Good lookin' though Biloxi23. I see what you were trying to say, but I see the repair shop in the near future.

Are you aware that you'll have to drill two huge saddle post holes in your guitar? Very permanent!

I really want to do this mod on my 72 custom but it requires a lot of consideration!

I'm very aware of the two huge saddle holes. I just figured I'll deal with that decision when I get the bridge plate holes taken care of.

I also saw the video with the install on the squire and could only wish that having to install a piece of wood in the bridge pup cavity was all I needed to worry about. I'm actually surprised that I can't find any info on doing this mod. There's gotta be a few people who have done this to their MIM. Other than a squire, it's the cheapest model out there. I figured there was a bunch out there.

Then compared to drilling to great big holes in your guitar, filling some little ones should be no great shakes. There are a number of solutions.
masking round the holes and pouring in expoy resin, tapping in BBQ skewers (with epoxy resin), drilling them out and tapping in hardwood dowelling (with epoxy resin), and so on....
