Well, it all started when I received $400.00 from my wife for my birthday present. I already have a Les Paul and an MIM Stratocaster so I decided I wanted a MIM Telecaster since my Strat is an excellent guitar. I purchased a Black and Chrome MIM Tele on the 18th of November, but the more I played it the more I realized that the high E string was really close to the edge of the finger board. I took a trip to my local GC and compared the different Teles they had in stock and lo and behold, my guitar was not right! I took it back and the guys in the guitar department agreed with me that the nut was not cut right. I exchanged it for a Midnight Wine Tele and it was great, the nut was right and the action was excellent. The salesperson plugged it in for me and I played it and was delighted with the tone. I took it home and went to plug it into my Super Champ XD and I noticed that a lot of pressure on the output jack was necessary for the chord to plug in all the way. After a while, the chord went in nicely, but would not stay in the jack. So, another trip to GC at opening time. This time, the salesperson went and got the last two, in the box MIM Teles they had left, a black and chrome and an Alpine white. After trying them both and checking them out meticulously, I opted for the black one. Well, for my inconvenience they went ahead and set up the guitar for me and I walked out a very satisfied customer. I guess third time IS the charm. Kudos to the guys at the San Marcos, CA GC for taking the time to make sure that the guitar was great in all aspects. The moral of the story: check and double check the guitar before you take it home no matter if it is MIA or MIM.

Well when you buy a guitar the shop should always do a setup. Even your good on line dealers will check a guitar and set it up before sending it to you. I am glad you did get it taken care of and enjoy your new Tele.

Thats kind of insane that you would straight take a guitar back to the shop that you enjoyed just because of a nut!!!

At some point in time those have to be changed or adjusted, if that was me I would of kept it and got a bone nut or an Earvana nut installed. It would be been better than stock AND fixed your problem.

Uh, no, why would I pay for replacing a defective part in a guitar that I could return as defective? Plus, I gig regularly, I am not a HOBBYIST, I am a working musician and have no intention or desire of having a defective guitar modded. I need a guitar to be playable from the get go. I don't have time to play around with defective guitars.

Ya, you should always be happy with the product you bought. If it wasn't made right and you didn't notice it right away, get it fixed or get a new one.
I'm a Lefty and I bought a guitar which had a defective nut. As a Lefty I had no other guitars to choose from at the store I bought it at. Oh, the store would have ordered me another one and it would take "a couple of months" to get one in the same color. (2002 Am Deluxe Lefty Strat - black.) So I kept the guitar. It's beautiful. They didn't have a tech (!) so I bought and cut a nut myself. I can do it but I'm no pro. Eventually, I'll have a real tech cut me a new nut (when I find a good one).
My point is that I've been cranky off and on over the years because I didn't really fix the problem. AND I love the guitar. So I think you absolutly did the right thing by resolving the problem right away.
Putting off the problem doesn't fix it.

Love,
Todd

You know you feel pretty much the same as I do. When I get something that is not right, it actually bugs me to the point of sleeplessness. I just figured that if the guitar has been bought and it has been less than 30 days, you should just take it back. I finally had the time to take the Tele to a local guitar shop for a setup and the guy behind the counter (he does the setups) actually played the guitar and proclaimed it a "very nice" MIM Tele. After the setp (the strings were set too low) the guitar plays like a dream. I'm glad I chose this Tele.

I have to admit, I do all my own work. I have two MIM's, a strat and a tele. I actually bought the guitars because I could afford them. If I gigged I would spend more. I believe you get what you pay for. That said, the guitars where great from the begening. My tele had the 60 cycle hum bad, but hey...I never cared for the electronics in them. This is a big area that sets these axes apart from the USA made ones. So both guitars have upgraded pickups and electronics. I found quality pickups on Ebay cheap (both Fender pickups) and put MOJO electric assemblies in . WOW ! What a difference ! I also put a Joe Berden bridge on the tele and upgraded to American series "string trees" on both. (I bit of advice, change the old style "trees" or get the spacers. Your tuning will greatly improve.) the cool part is now they are my "custom" guitars and I bet they would hold thier own against more expencive axes.I have about $100 in additions in each. Not too expencive. Also I have a new added hobby. Guitar Tech. Pretty Cool.

They make quality drop-in electronics for all kinds of guitars. The prices are exelent as well. You can purchise pickups too. Both my MIM's are MOJO equipt. They use all brand name parts and even "vintage" style cloth insulated wire. There are a ton of dirrerent options too. 4-way tele, 3-way strat, "blender strat" and so on. No. I don't work for them. There are many other companies that sell similar products. So shop around. For those of you who might have an older axe that needs a little TLC, here is a great way to save some cash. The work is enjoyable too. Just don't be in a hurry.

I have a Guitar Center story witha happy ending. I was in Peoria, lllinois to celebrate my 50th birthday a week ago. Heard the GC ad on the radio for a big sale and went in looking for a higher level Squier Strat with a maple neck. I sold a great Japanese made Univox strat I bought in 76 and have regretted it for many years. As anyone who has ever been in a GC on a Saturday afternoon knows, the place was chaos: half a dozen teenage shredders in training playing guitars they can't afford, some knucklehead testing a half stack at earbleed inducing volume, salegirls in low cut tops marking ma as a guy with cash, etc. No Squiers to be found so I wandered around for a few minutes and I had one of those "Wayne's World" moments. Up on their display was a sunburst MIM Tele with a big A__ sale sign. A beam of light settled on it and a choir began to sing in my ears. Since I was a 10 year old kid and stared up at one of these on the wall in the local music store where I took lessons (and bought the Univox), I have wanted one. To shorten the story, played it, bought it, love it. It's so cool to play "Brown Sugar" on the guitar it was meant for. I guess it could be worse, I only had to wait 40 years to achieve my Fender dream.
