How do I tint the neck and head stock like an older look and high gloss the fretboard and head stock?

I used kiwi brown shoe polish and it worked quite well.

Yes, very well. It looks great. But how permanent was it?
Does it come off on your hands under heavy playing? Did it fade with time?

Okay, I couldn't resist. My brand new Squier Thinline Tele hase that infamous "neon white" neck with its infamous non-tinted glow. I experimented with the shoe polish on the Squier. That stuff works VERY well. I just applied a heavy coat, waited a minute or two, and then wiped off/ buffed out the excess.
