So I'm buying a telecaster in the price range of $500-$800. I've heard good things about the Highway one, and I would prefer a mia tele, but are there any others that you would suggest?

I also heard good things about the Lite Ash tele (Made in Korea) and the Classic 50's and 60's. (mim)

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
Pat

Hi Pat,

I asked a similar question about a month or 2 back and I was pointed in the direction of the Highway. But when I went to try one in the local store I also tried a Baja (MIM) and now I'm torn between the 2. I live in the UK so not sure what one would set you back in the States but over here the Baja is about £80-£100 cheaper than the Highway.

The Highway I tried had a superb neck and the greasebucket circuit sounded spot on. But then the Baja has custom pups and 4 way wiring. The Highway has a satin finish and on the blonde one I tried the wood grain was visible which was really nice. The Baja was glossy and looked pretty smart too.

Best advice is try them all out. The best one is the one that suits you best. Afterall every guitar is different. Don't forget when trying them out to try and use a similar amp to the one you normally use that way there won't be any nasty surprises when you get it home.

Which one did I get? Actually neither as I won't have the money to buy for another month so I'll just have to keep on agonising til then.

I just picked up a used Highway One Tele at GC for $500, I love it. I like the thin finish and the neck, and the alnico pickups are twangy as hell. I usually mod up my guitars (change pickups, tuners, etc) but other than a white pearloid pickguard, I'm leaving it stock. It sounds like happy through my Blues Jr.

The Highway 1 is the only MIA in that price range unless you can find one used. My local GC usually has a few MIA used teles.

I would say go somewhere with a big inventory and try them all out.

My experience with the one and only Lite Ash MIK I've ever owned and still own is this;
Good workmanship quality and it responds in intonation very well to a full professional setup. The entire quitar feels very nice in your hands.
But the tone in strings 1,2,3 is harsh and the three base strings have no life. I eventually gave the body a custom paint job, swapped out the pickguard for a different color, and it now makes a beautiful piece of art on my wall.

Regarding my MIA 2006 American Series (they weren't called Amer Standard then);
Its nearly perfect! I only say nearly because what in this world IS perfect? I can't find anything to complain about this git.
But, I highly doubt you can find a dealer today willing to sell for less than about $900. I got mine new for $830 almost 3 years ago and no one else wanted to touch that price.

All the MIM models;
Sure do hear a lot of good things about 'em.

I would save up a few extra bucks and go for an American Standard. It really is worth the money and then some.

Highway series will wear in with you with it's nitro. finish....& it is a USA model. Lastly, it will fit the budget.
