Tweed - Where do you live man? Now I love the Teles but I was drawn to the horizon. Can't help but wonder what's across that road!

There is a reason they are known as ashtrays.

When I first got my 67 tele back in the 70's I left the thing on the guitar. But it didn't fit tight and I found myself resting my wrist on it...the result was the front piece would gradually slid down onto the strings. I stopped using it and now it just sits in the case with the extra strings and picks.

I think those bridge cover are good and have a different tone.
As you all know, there is a pickup undernieth there and that cover keeps all of the string vibrations from escaping there fore the pickup "picks up" more of the sound.

Am i correct on this???

Well, not quite...the string vibrates, true, but it is the preturbation of the magnetic field caused by the string vibration that induces a voltage into the windings of the pickups, the acoustic sound wave does not affect the pickups. The cover was meant to help with shielding originally.

Found this on the Jackson Rare Guitars site about Bill Carson who used a broadcaster with the bridge cover left on but with a mod.

http://www.jacksonsrareguitars.com/arti ... ea-10.html

It's about 3/4 the way down the page and there is a close up pic of the bridge.

sounds like something I might try.

I wish they'd include them with new guitars even though, like most people here, I think they're useless, both functionally and cosmetically. I just want one to put my cigarette butts into.

Fender still sells these covers direct from the website. I've been thinking about it, but I haven't taken the plunge.

I think it makes the guitar look totally vintage. I'll end up with one. But I don't smoke cigarettes, so do you think it'll be functional?

Honestly? No. Other than a marginal -- and, for that matter, somewhat questionable -- benefit as an additional shield, the ashtray does nothing to improve efficiency or functionality. Indeed, it actually impedes playing: palm muting and any sort of picking near the bridge are rendered impossible by its presence. I think that if it was useful Fender would continue to include it with all of its Telecaster models. In my mind, the original bridge style with the raised edges is superior to the modern, flat bridge assembly only with respect to aesthetics and, if it happens to be your "thing," the vintage feel.
