I have a Two-Tone Sunburst Tele that I would like to refinish in Blond or Daphne Blue. What would be the best way to go about this? Should I sand off the remaining paint right now?

For the Daphne Blue, I'd say No.

But for the Blond (where it's nice to have the grain partially showing through), I'd say Yes.

Hello Global Cooling,

I don't know what type of telecaster
you candidate is but when you remove
the finish you may find you have only a
veneer on the top and bottom of the body{MIM}
and a multiple piece body.
Just thought you should know.

Cheers.

If you are committed to sanding it and going with a "blonde" refinish. I'd use a palm sander with a medium grit paper to start and some care not to sand too deep.

No matter which way you go for a good finish you will want to remove all the old finish. This is a major job, you will want to take out the pickups and remove the neck. So if you are planning any other upgrades now is the time. I would recommend you use a paint remover first. That will reduce a lot of the sanding but not all. After it's all nice and smooth you will need to apply a sanding sealer then a final light sanding with at least 400 grit or finer paper. 4X-5x steel wool is great to use between coats or 1200 to 1500 grit wet/dry. You don't need a lot of color coats but you will want to have more clear coats for protection and to build that deep gloss. Make friends with a local custom woodworker or cabinet maker. They will give some great tips and might even help. Don't forget to shield your cavities with copper tape before you wire it back together. If you neck fits tight mask the pocket before you put the clear coat on. Good Luck

P.S. It's kinda like burnin bridges. Once you start You can't go back the way ya came 8)
