I was at a local guitar shop and ran across a guitar I need help identifying. It is a Telecaster with a Stratocaster shaped and sized headstock. It said Fender Telecaster on it. It is in a glass display case, and the employees were arguing about who was supposed to clean some amps, so I didn't bother to ask them. I cannot remember if it said Made in USA on it or not and the serial number on the headstock did not start with a letter, but I do not remember what number it started with. It looks like a Strat neck on a Tele, but it has the Tele decal, so I think it is factory and not a retrofit type thing. I am guessing it is from the 70's based on the size and shape of the headstock. It is obviously and older guitar and not artificially aged.
Does anyone have any ideas or info on this guitar?

Sounds like a Telecaster Deluxe from the 70's. I belive they started making them in 1972 and ran until 1980 or so. Fender has been making a re-issue of the guitar for a few years now. It comes with two humbucker pick ups, a 12" radius neck, and the Strat style headstock. I have one that was made in 1974 that also has the Strat type tremolo bridge (though the tremolo arm has been broekn off on the block). The pick ups (the first humbuckers produced by Fender) were designed by Seth Lover, the original desinger of the Gibson humbuckers.

This may also be a telestrat whichis is a combination tele body with strat neck.

My dad picked one up in Japan a few years ago.

It has a strange sound - neither truely Tele nor Strat, although most people comment on the very high output bridge pickup as being very pleasing.

Here are a few pictures: -

Thanks for all of the info.
I dont think it was new solely based on the serial #. It was 212565 or something like that.
I cannot remember if it had traditional Tele pup's or humbickers.
It was natural with a black pickguard, which was prtty popular for that era.
I thought it was pretty cool, and had never seen, or just never noticed, a Tele with that headstock.

I think the Telecaster Custom also has a Stratocaster neck and headstock. If it has a neck humbucker, and a bridge single coil, it's a Custom. If it has two humbuckers, it's a Deluxe. If it looks like the pictures in a previous reply, then that'd be what it is.
