Hey there,

I've got a tele that's in need of new frets. It's a MIM 50th anniv. that's been my main axe for the past ten years. It's the first guitar I've ever bought and was the only one I had for the past nine years. This is my baby!!

Anyway, I decided that it was time to do some upgrading. The main thing I noticed was a lot of flat spots on the frets. I got a guy who builds fender style guitars and he's gonna do the job 4 me, but I don't know to much about fret sizes. Can anyone help me with info about the different sized frets out there. I play all kinds of music, from country to metal, with lots of experimental in there, if that helps.

p.s. it's also getting a set of SCN's and a bigsby and I wanna replace the nut. Is there any nuts out there that can help with the tuning issues that might arise with the bisgby or should I get one custom made?

Earvana is the way to go with a nut. Graphtech like slip properties and your guitar will be more intoned so therefore play intune better.
I swear by em. forget bone brass or LSR. The minute i tried a earvana all my other guitars sounded out of tune. Now i have to fit it to the rest of em too.

I checked out earvanas website and liked what I saw. Seems like it might be worth trying out. Thanks for the info.

What about frets though. I believe it came with medium jumbos, stock. I like the way they feel, but was wondering what going with a different size will do with my playing.

Well, your first step is to find a Good Fret Guy. Do you know a competent luthier who could do such a job?

And actually, before a complete refret, usually you can get by with a much less expensive leveling and recrowning job. The Good Fret Guy will be able to tell you if there's enough metal left to get by with just a leveling and recrowing. If he's good, that will make the guitar feel like it's brand new again!

Good luck.

I've got a good fret guy. He builds fender style guitars and I've had the pleasure of playing a lot of his creations. I asked him about leveling and recrowning them and he said it wouldn't be worth it, that they're to worn and most likely just need to be replaced. He wants to know if I want the same size frets on or something different and since I don't know to much about the subject I thought I'd ask around. Cost is not an issue since it's being do by a family friend.

Thanks for the link. It really puts a better perspective on things. I think I might have to go a little bigger than the medium jumbos.

I was about to make a comment, but I think CA Feathers' link just about says it all.

I think I'm going to try the Stainless Steel frets, when it's time for me to do a fret job. I'm hard on frets, and the Stainless Frets might wear longer for me.
