Hello Bradleyjp25,

I cannot say if they sound any better,
but I certainly believe they look better.

Also, welcome to the forum.

Cheers.

It's all in the ear. It is what you think sounds better. Alder and Ash all have different densities and they create different tones. It comes down to what you like that counts.

it could just be my bad ears, but I find alder has more scoop and sparkle to it while ash is a bit warmer/more clear?

The heavier Northern ash bodies that I've played seem to have more sustain than the lighter swamp ash bodies, but I'm sure there could be an argument favoring the opposite.

To each their own.

Mikes right, ash is a difficult wood to judge without playing. I recently got a MIM FSR solid ash tele. The first one had a big gap in the neck pocket so I sent it back. It was light as a feather and had a kind of plinky hollowish tone, I got another of the same exact model and its a good bit heavier than my les paul, its got a more powerful sound and sustains like mad. Wit the first one you had to really dig in to the guitar , with the one I have now not so much.

All guitars sound different than one another, though often times the difference is often times subtle, with ash its a different ball game and its best to try before you buy so you know what your in for.

I play a tele thinline with an ash body and it sounds better than any other tele i have ever played. So ash totally sounds better than alder.

First off, welcome to the Fender forums.

The thinlines are going to sound different anyway compared to solid bodies, but I agree that ash is a better tonewood generally speaking.

I prefer the alder over ash for a few reasons:

1) It's generally lighter weight than ash, which allows you to be able to gig longer (trust me every ounce counts when your standing for over an hour straight).

2) It's almost always cheaper.

3) The sound isn't all that different (at least not for the extra money and weight).

I tried out an American Deluxe Ash Strat in my local shop, but wound up buying the American Deluxe Tele (not ash). I have to say I couldn't be happier with the purchase.
