Greetings everyone. I'm new to forum. I play a Heritage 535, Fat FLoyd Rose Strat, and a Tele. I'm not a professional. I describe my self as a hacker. My winter goal is to finally learn to read music. I'm looking forward to spending time on the forum.

Right now I need some help. My mex tele is in need of an upgrade. I purchased a neck and bridge SCN pickup set. I want to wire these up to a 4 way switch so I can switch from solo neck or bridge pickup to running both in serial or parallel. Each pick up has 3 wire: Neck - black/green/white and the bridge has black (with two pigtail wire grounding lug attached) / green / yellow.

I cannot find any wiring diagrams to support this setup. Can someone provide me with a diagram(s) and also tell me if I might have to change or add a capcitor and or adding a resistor? If so which ones should I use?

Thanks very much for your help in this project.

Todd T.

Thanks for your help. I am looking forward to seeing what you find. So far even the local shops don't know how to set this configuration up.

Maybe you can help me on this question. I found a 4 way switch setup diagram for standard pickups - two wire - but they don't show grounding the bridge as was originally done on my guitar. Should i always ground the bridge and bridge pickup to the guitar body and back to the 250K pot?

Thanks
Todd T.

Click on support (top of this page) and then on wiring diagrams.
Go for the Baja Tele, it has a a 4 pos. switch.
I think the neck pickup cover needs a ground wire.

Good luck,

Peter

Peter, thanks for the try. However that Baha diagram has a 2 wire bridge pickup and an S-1 pot/switch both of which I don't have nor want to use. I want to use the SCN's (3 wire each) on a 4 way switch with my 250 standard pots. This way I can run each pick up in solo, or both in serial or parallel.

My problem is that I need a complete wiring diagram detailing all the wire colors and where they get attached alonmg with switch jumpers and leads to the pots

ALso, I need to know if I should be using different capacitor(s) and/or resistors in this setup.

Does anybody know how I can e-mail the technical group at Fneder? I can't find an address to save my life or this pickup configuration.

Thanks

Todd T.

Yeah you should pretty much always ground the bridge. Some Tele bridge pickups have a brass plate on the bottom of them that the mounting screws pass into. Since they contact the bridge this acts as the ground. Check your pickup, if it doesn't have the brass plate, ground that bridge!

Idaho, yes there are a lot of diagrams except for the way I'm wiring - as I said in a previous e-mail. I finally found a "secret" ( yea right ) Fender phone number that the Dealers use for tech support and I got my answers.

And according to the guy at Fender, that they know of, I seem to be the first to have a (MIM or otherwise) Tele with SCN's on a 4 way switch.

I also changed modern 6 key bridge to a gold anodised old style bridge, , and added gold control plate with black control knobs. I wanted to have a gold cover on the neck pickup but Fender warned me not to remove it because I likely wreck the pickup. Apparently there is stuff under the cover that can be compromised,. the last item to be replaced with gold will be the tuners. The pick guard is now black, it was white, The guitar body is a Fender medium blue. the white on the blue was to NYC Floridian for me. Reminded me a guy who wears blue slacks with white loafers and has a convertible Caddy to match. I also splurged on a set up DR black strings.
I wanted something a little more ballsey but with some glizt. I think I got it.

Anyway the guitar looks awesome and plays with unbelievable punch and sound. So at the flick of a switch I can play each pickup in solo or in series or parallel. It's so much easier than pulling the volume knob up, like on an American Delux and I can do it on the fly for pulling solos mid song.

So all in all and after two weeks of searching, Fender came thru and I have the guitar I wanted. My total cost was $200.00 for the guitar, 85.00 for the SCN's off Ebay, 10.00 for the control plate, 15.00 for the switch, 9.00 for the knobs and 10.00 for the strings for a total of 329.00. Not bad at all and effectively I have an American Delux for a whole lot less.

LAStly, I did not change the 022 CAp. to a 05 because I didnt want to cut off the high's that much. The 05 would have mellowed it out a wee bit to much in my opinion.

I would think the fourway mod switch diagram would have workrd for you. How many ways can you wire a fourway switch?

The issueis not the 4 way switch but rather the SCN's. Each pickup has different colored wires and 3 each. You can't use the available wiring diagrams from Fender or other sources to wire them up. None match my intended set up. First there are no generic diagrams available for the SCN's anyway - yet that is. The ones available are with the S-1 switch.

Even FEnder had to get back to me after a discussion with their techs to consider the best wiring in their opion. This wasn't a slam dumk on their behalf. If I had asssumed any knowledge of assumed wiring possibilites I stood the chance of walking into confusion and frustration and the very possibility of not getting the funation ( or no function) I wanted.

As far as wiring a 4 way?? there are lots of ways to wire it. backwards, inverted and preverted. Take your pick.

Thanks,

Todd T.

Even as we speak Fender is working on a problem that we can't diagnose. If I touch the pick guard within 1 inch of the lower pick up mounting screw towards the center of the pick guard (below high e), I get scartching or crackling coming thru the amp. Everything is fine if I don't touch the pick guard. They don't know what this is. Right now the thinking is that wiring SCN 's on a MEX tele will need different grounding than they use on the American Delux setup or on a standard 4 way switch setup. They hope to get back to me tomorrow with an answer.

So maybe now you understand why this isn't an easy setup. Nobody seems to have done it before and so I'm charting new territory setup. The SCN's are really amazing pickups. Once I get the grounding sorted out it will be an amazing guitar. Fortunately I can play it without touching the pick guard. I just keep my hand / palm back by the bridge.

So if I upgrade my stock tuners, which ones should I use in your opinion? And I want to use plug and play tuners. I don't want to drill any new holes or enlarge the ones I've got.

Check for the Telecaster Pro wiring diagram that had the twisted Tele and samarium Colbalt pickup and a 4way switch in it.

I've looked at all the Fender diagrams for Teles. FEnder doesn't list a PRO model. Where is the Pro / Twisted Tele diagram located? At Fender or someone else\??

Looks like it has one samarium colbalt and one twisted pickup
http://www.fender.com/customshop/instru ... 500402806#
And here is a none Fender site wich show them also
http://www.musicgadgets.net/2007/04/27/ ... aster-pro/
It may not help you though since I am not sure the wiring of the Twisted one. The Fender site just shows the guit and the specs.
