Original or the modern.

Could some one please describe the difference in sound between the two.

Thanks

To be frank with you, recently I've bought a Fender American Deluxe Series Ash Telecaster Electric Guitar (2-Tone Sunburst Maple Fretboard) which is made by the famous '52 Tele. I haven't tried the, as you say original one, but I can tell you that this guitar that I just told you about is incredible. It has such a clear and sometimes sad color of tone, perfect fretboard, 2-tone switching system (humbucker) and 22 frets.
According some logic, I think that they should be the same becuase afterall, the modern one is made exactelly by the '52 MODEL.

I hope that you found this kind a usefull and I'm sorry if I may have made some spell mistakes...

Keep rockin

I must admit I haven't played a Telecaster with the original switching, but from the description I know I would clearly prefer the modern switch. The real difference is switch position two on the modern system. This is the position that has the neck and bridge pickups both on in parallel. This position is so distinctive and so closely associated with the Telecaster that I just wouldn't want to be without it. The sound of position 2 is bouncy and spongey. If you roll off the highs a little it sounds very much like a Gibson ES-335 in position 2. So it's very good for jazz. It's also very good for country and country-rock. I have read that BB King often records with a Telecaster instead of a 335.

I own a '52 AVRI and currently, have it wired with the vintage setup. I have yet to re-wire it with the modern tone setting because I am lazy. Let me tell you, even with the limited pickup selection, it still sounds SUPERB. You get your bright, classic Tele twang from the bridge with your very nice, smoothe rhythm with nice lows in the 2nd position. I will admit, the neck pickup is completely worthless but I do play around on it from time to time. That is all you will every use the neck pickup for though, experimentation as it is pretty much useless in other facets. I have been meaning to put the new capacitor in but I am afraid it will change my tone too much. Don't kid yourself, changing to the modern switching will change your tone but I'm not sure how much. I am fine with my current, classic setup but I really am tempted to switch it. If you want to get a feel for the neck pickup...
1.Set your current guitar to the neck PU
2. Turn your tones all the way down
3.If your amp has them, turn the Highs all the way down, mids all the way up and lows all the way down.

It pretty much sounds like a weakly powered Bass guitar but the tones in the other 2 positions are sweeter than honey.

I disagree about the neck pickup. It is a classic sound - throaty and warm. It's a great position for blues. A good example of this pickup at its best is the opening riff of the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun King."

You're right but it all depends on your gear. I can get some cool tones from it out of my Orange and TS 808. In most cases, I have to have my head up pretty high to get some cool tones from it. Unless you are jamming around 6+ it sounds flat.

The top selector position was refered to as Mud if that gives you any indication of what the vintage tone wiring gives you.

I had the 60th ann. limited edition Tele and that pretty well describes what it sounded like to me.

I have an older 52 reissue wired up with all new pups, pots and switch and modern tone settings and I like it much better.

My opinion only.
