Hello. I am a new tele owner and would like to know where you guys pick relative to pickup position? My natural tendousy is to play close to the bridge but, my pick occasionally hits the pickup. Is the proper location between the pickups? Thanks!

Hi 5STRING,
Not sure if this helps but this is where I play mine, I suppose after a while your hand will just go to the most comfortable spot. FRANK

Depends if I'm palm muting or not, but my pick hand usually hovers closer to the neck pickup

I think it depends on what your playing. I find, with myself, that when I'm doing faster metal riffs I'm on the bridge and when I'm doing really soft jazz and ballad type stuff I'm actually picking on the fretboard. Be carefull sith that neck pickup though. When I'm in that area I sometimes hit it with the pick and get a popping noise that sounds really bad.

Stick with it. You'll find the spots that are comfortable for you with the styles you play.

This is why I like Teles. I hook my little finger round the old style bridge.
Bad habit I know, but I've got worse!

My pick usually goes between the pickups. I'm not always 100% accurate, though.

I try and stay in the middle unless I want that twangy country tone. The closer you pick to the bridge the more country twang you get.

Sorry lads I gotta do it . . .

Left hand: fretting on the neck
Right hand: strumming or picking

Head: banging!

After switching almost exclusively to low wattage true class A tube amps I find myself moving my pick hand constanstly over different areas on any guitar I play. The amps are so responsive every nuance from position to attack to even the angle of the pick very noticeably effects tone, its totally changed the way I play and I never want to go back. Going from shimmering clean subtle runs to full on blistering crunch just based on your picking attack is just simply awesome.

Switching to those amps are whats brought me back to the fender camp, traditional strats and teles just seem to have much more varied character than my les pauls, and other set neck humbucker guitars now.

I personally like to pick near the neck-PU 'cause my LiteAsh Tele has a sweet and singing sound there. Especially when the neck-PU is working.

I second that. I, too, wrap my pinky around the bridge. I do a lot of palm muting and that style helps. Also, it helps me with my natural sloppiness. (And I've been playing 30+ years so, I ain't getting any less sloppy.)

Love,
Todd

This reply is inspired by Iceman. I got ahold of a custom hand wired Fender Champ and had to toss out my LP clone and grab the tele and trade another Ibanez guitar for a MIM strat. All it has is a volume knob, the rest is up to you.
I pick where I get the best tone for what I'm trying to do. Like Iceman says there's nothing like having all the control in your hands. Pick attack, angle, where, and some subtle tweaks on your volume knob and you can get a whole spectrum of tones without tweaking the amp or stomping on one of those god awful boxes that run out of batteries in mid jam.
Very cool.
There's no real answer to this question. Just play where you can get the tone you want. It could be anyplace between the bridge and the 10th fret!!!

That's why I love playing guitar, you 're always learning.
Just where and how your pick hits the strings changes your tone like mad.
Don't worry so much about where you pick at first. Alternate picking is the main thing. You should practice hybrid too. Once your technique is sound, you'll be able to pick anywhere. Like the others have said, where you pick is about tone.
