why do some teles feature 2 string retainers at the pegs and most feature 1?
I'm building a tele and can't seem to find a rhyme or reason as to the placement and the number of the retainers. got a clue?

Staggered post elliminate the need of a string tree.

And the vintage reissues only have one because that's all the originals had.

If you look closely, the tree/retainer on the early 50's Tele was in a different location also. The original was round, rather than the wing-type. They later went to the EZ-glider type that is on the American models.

I've seen some Teles with circular machined brass retainers that were finished or anodized black. 8)

In the beginning Tele's had one string retainer
Then they got two (twice the fun)!
Now there are staggered height tuning keys
Go with what you like, they all work
