I asked myself that question 2 years ago, played both and ended up with the Baja. I loved the classic 50's look of the Baja and the Custom Shop mods put it over the top. The pickups and 4 way, S-1 switching are very cool.

You can't lose either way. They're both excellent guitars for the money. Play both and see which one you like the best.

I own a Hwy 1. I love it. I didn't play the Baja first, from what I'm hearing, I wish I had. But, you can't go wrong with the Hwy 1.

The highway1's finish is better than the baja. The blonde baja does have a 2 piece ash body. Do you get the same with the american highway one for its price. My baja resonates superbly its a real rib tickler. I think your going to get better fretwork on the highway1 though. The baja has custom shop pickups though a broadcaster bridge and twisted tele neck.
I got the baja cos im not put off by extensive setup work that some mexican guitars require.

My 3-color burst Hwy 1 is a 3 piece body. I believe it's Alder. The sustain is superb. I don't think the different woods have much of a variation in sustain. My neck is superb and so is the fret work. All the frets are even in height. The MIMs don't always require extensive setup work. Many of them are excellent right out of the box. I think a person should buy what they feel comfortable with. As Leo said, "USA made Fenders are made in California by Mexicans, Mexico Fenders are made in Mexico by Mexicans. I have quite a feeling that they are all pretty close in craftsmanship unless you go for the highdollar Custom Shop stuff.

I love mexican guitars i own two of em and one american. The difference between em was the amount of setup time. The american fell right into what i wanted it to do. The mexicans took a bit more persuading. Needless to say they are very good guitars. The only thing about the baja i dont like is the saddles its about time fender started a compensated 3 saddle system. The baja with its modded 52 theme would of been a ideal platform to launch said idea from. The routing for the bridge pickup shows between the bridge and control panel too.
The build quality of usa guitars is normally superior to mexican, japanese or korean. Not always but most of the time. My baja fortunately came with excellent fretwork and a nice straight neck. I feel lucky to have acquired two mexican guitars with such quality. For the highway one i'd expect it. Fender usa is after all 'the flagship'.

I have played a hwy1 but not a baja. I would probably go with the baja, cos it's got custom shop wiring and the colors that i like :)

Hi:

I have both, after putting reasonable size frets on the Hwy1 I would call them pretty equal after setting both up.

The bridge PU on the Hwy1 has a little more horsepower, but I like the tona of the Baja Tele Better.

I'm not super Impressed with the Hwy1...I'm into mine for $575.00 Paid 200 for it used, then had the frets shaved and then refretting it because I didn't like the feel.

The Baja off the rack felt much better

So it appears I'm the only one that likes the Hwy 1 Tele. I guess that makes me unique, right? :?: :?: :?:

I went with the Highway One Texas Tele and I'm really happy with it.

1) the greasebucket tone circuit is awesome
2) the whole '52 Tele vibe is cool
3) it's made in the USA man

I was thinking about posting this very same poll! I was considering adding the 50's Tele to it too, but I'm guessing the Baja still would have swept the poll.

I've played both and I'm leaning towards the Baja. I do like the feel of the back of the Highway 1's neck with it's satin finish instead of the gloss though. Fender should paint the body with a gloss finish in the future, but leave the neck's finish the way it is. The Baja is more versitile in tones though, for the Highway 1 to be American made, it does lack the usual American made fit and finish.
