Has anyone realized that the MIM Standard costs 450,00US$ and the MIA is 1,000US$ ? Why comparing the two models and expecting the MIM is at the same level or better?

Anyway, the Teles coming from Mexico are mostly great IMHO.

It should be noted that a MIA comes with one of the best hard cases money can buy and a few other goodies. That narrows the value for money gap somewhat...

As I mentioned before -- it's somewhat a matter of intangibles. I find that the MIA have a bit better finish, a bit better hardware, a little more attention to detail and somewhat better electronics.

Sound of course is a total intangible - I have two MIM Thinlines and a Hwy1 Tele and they all have their own sound and I like them all.

But when you get to whether the MIA (sound aside) is worth 3X an MIM ... by pure, hard objective standards, probably not. Is my friend's Honda SUV worth twice what my Ford Escape is worth when looking only at the intended functions. I doubt it.

But since the MIA will (with care) maintain that value differential, it will still be relatively worth that years from now. I could sell a 7 year old MIA for more than a 7 year old MIM just as my friend will get a higher trade on his 7 year old Honda than I'd get on my Escape.

Once you get beyond value though -- unless the owner happens to be someone famous, at some point the MIM and the MIA will converge in value many years from now. So realistically, it all comes down to which one plays "the way ya like it."

Demonstrates the need to test play guitars before purchasing. Too many factors involved for a general theory to consistently hold (i.e. MIAs are always better than MIAs). Of course, this coming from someone who has purchased numerous guitars off eBay...

Is it a question of materials or craftsmanship that account for the difference?

I've heard that excact thing from a bassist in this one band I saw a month or so ago (they're not to big, but good and nice, so we could go up afterwards and talk to them). He has a Mexican Jazz bass and loves it. He now uses it over his Ernie Ball, which was (from what I know) his bass of choice last year.

I have a Mexican Telecaster myself, and it's got the best neck I've ever played.

I can't remember exactly who makes the case for Fender, but it's either SKB or TKL.. though I remember it sells for less than 150,00US$ at MusiciansFriend. Still a 400,00 US$ difference.

Yes of course there's still a difference, but one that is not nearly as great as some suggest...

Well worth the extra if you can actually afford the MIA, methinks. :D

My tele is a MIM and i love it. It does seem to play easier and really if i was blind folded I could pick up a MIM tele and play it than a Made in USA tele and not hear or feel a difference. 8) 8) 8)

But the chances are that ANY other MIM Telecaster guitar will play and sound differently to your MIM... :?

So how can you tell that the MIA will play and sound the same?

I think what he is saying is that other than some visual cues, there is nothing in the playability or sound that identifies his Tele as a MIM.

You get what you pay for... usually. I have gotten my fingers on one or two american teles that were likely at the store level mistreated and woulda rather bought the MIM ;) But I have a Lite Ash tele.. and a standard tele. And the store I work at has an american standard tele. The American Standard is just such a better guitar than my MIM standard.

I own and love both MIM and MIA; I have to say the MIA's are better all around. just my opinion but for the $$$$ ????????
My only defense is, I support American labor as much as I can, so when I have the money I will go MIA...

I LOVE my MIM Nashville Deluxe Tele.
And that's all I have to say about that.
