A few months ago I entered a musicstore to buy a decent Fender Telecaster. They had a dozen and a half Teles in there. I took each of the guitars in my hands, took a close and critical look at it and tested it, with the tone and volume knob fully rolled up, through a Fender Deluxe Reverb tube amp with the reverb turned off and a setting that would allow me to play from clean to crunch just by changing the attack on the guitar strings.
After a while I recognized that one of the instruments was on a higher level and stood above all the others that were nicely made, but average guitars, with nothing special about them. But this black one simply got it - that special something. It had this strong electric singing-voice I know from several old original Fender Telecasters from the 60s I have played on. A surprisingly long-lasting sustain, a wide dynamic range like it had been played-in for several decades, a perfectly smooth neck that fit my small hand quite nicely, plus the shop`s luthier had made a good setup on this guitar sealed my decision to buy it. It came with a deluxe hardshell case as a nice addition.
This guitar could have been made in Lamphuukhistan or on the dark side of the moon - I would have bought it though. To me it`s a Fender Telecaster - plain and simple.

The answer depends on who you talk to. I own 4 Telecasters. All 4 are MiM and to me they all sound great. They feel great too when handling and playing. I own 4 Stratocasters, 1 MiJ, 2 USA, 1 MiM. All four sound the same to me and that's great.

The thing that makes me a big MiM fan is aesthetics. MiM Strats and Teles are available in the styles, colors, fretboard combinations I want and like and that doesn't hold true for the USA Teles and Strats.

On any of my 4 Teles, if there would have been a USA version that looked like one of the ones I was looking for -- forget the sound for a momemt -- I probably would have bought them because of so many people saying to buy USA. BUt, since they didn't have what I wanted, I went MiM and do not regret a single purchase.

But the MiM vs. MiA is a topic I don't think will be settled since it is so subjective.

There is a reason why the MIJ instruments are not to be sold in the states or anywhere else for that matter- because fender usa could not match the overall quality in MIJ instruments for the price. Otherwise, we would see more of them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, that is why MIM guitars began. I also think for the value- there is more value in a mim vs an mia for sure.

I also thing that there is a bit of a hate relationship with mexico backing this up- I would love to see fender usa pump out a '62 reissue for the same price as a roadworn

That'll never happen. not in a million years.

Hey Blertles - I have two CIJ's. I have a Mustang Re-issue and my Tele w/ Bigsby is a 60's re-issue. Both of them seem to be near perfect as far as fit and finish. I can't comment on the quality of the electrics, just because my ear isn't fine tuned enough to be able to tell that much of a difference.

I can't imagine they could be a better guitar though - I do think Japanese Fenders are of very high quality and there is a lot of value in them.

How's your project coming along? Any more ideas? I think you may be onto a solid plan. I think there is a niche market for what you want to do and I think you could pull it off. I think by starting small, with just a few guitars aimed at the target group you want you'll be able to find some success. I'm on your side Brother!!!

Yes, you are wrong. The Ensenada plant makes its own bodies and necks. They are not shipped across the border for assembly.

Hey, you learn something new everyday.
I wasn't sure so it's good to know.
What about the hardware (bridges etc?). I know the higher end pickups may be MIA.

Much as the argument that (ipso facto) quality of the MIA's is better than the MIM's makes me laugh and yawn in equal measure...

.... I'm pleased that at least we're not discussing whether the quality of the MIT's (Made in Taiwan) is better than the MIC's (Made in China).

So – regardless of my jaundiced views on the subject – long may the debate continue.

AFAIK in the time the Telecaster came out first it was promoted as an "electric spanish guitar" - concerning Mexico`s history and the influence of Spain one should always prefer a MIM Tele to a MIA because they are wayyyyy more authentic - just kidding here.

Just take 100 Fender Telecasters from the USA, Mexico, Japan, Korea and let them be played by three guitarists - a Beginner, an Amateur and a Guitar-God who all sit Onstage behind a closed curtain in front of an audience consisting of "A made in (insert Birthplace here) Tele is better than a made in (Birthplace) Tele" - people. I`m sure they will not be able to tell you where the guitar they are right hearing was made. The only thing they will be able to tell you is that the guitar sounding is a Telecaster and perhaps the skill level it is played on.
And if you then let them play all these guitars themselves with a blindfold on they won`t be able to tell you either.
Just my 2c.

Hey! Actually, you're thinking the Highway 1/California series guitars... which are American parts, with some Mexican manufacture.
