Which should I get? Are the pickguards clear or black? Are both made in Japan? Thanks.

As far as I'm aware, both the classic 72 teles are made in Mexico.

I have the 72 custom as I like the 'frying pan' tele bridge sound.

The neck humbucker is very warm and thick (often think is has a real nice piano sound)

Both pups together are quite complementary.

I went for the custom so I can have my cake and eat it.
I feel it's a tele at heart with some cool mods, and I feel the delux doesn't really know what guitar it wants to be! It's a LesPaulTeleStrat!

I can see it's appeal, but for me, the choice was easy.

'72 deluxe and '72 custom, same guitars with different style, classic one with modern one. '72 deluxe has vintage '70 headstock, bigger than standard strat. But both of them are great.

I would go for the Custom, because out of the 64 guitars I own, I don't have one.... :( But for you my friend, I would get what feels best in your hands. :D

I'm sorry I traded up my Custom 72, a great guitar.

Nice fan club...

If you are only going to buy one Tele, the Custom is the best choice. You can still get the trademark Tele twang from the bridge pickups, but with the HB and bridge together, you get a BIG sound. :D

And of course you can tune to open G and channel KEEF 8)

I already have a Squier Standard Fat Telecaster (late 90s model, Sherwood Green Metallic/Rosewood), so I don't really "need" a Fender Telecaster Custom (unless I allow myself that G.A.S. attack). With that said, I'll be looking to add a Fender Telecaster Deluxe to my collection, sometime within the next two years. Along the way, I'm planning to build a 12-string "Telecaster Deluxe," likely using mostly parts from Warmouth. So far, I've not seen any better prices, for Fender Wide-Range (Seth Lover) Humbuckers, than Warmouth. Sure I could just buy a Fender Stratocaster XII, but I doubt it would yield the tones I "envision" from a 12-string "Telecaster Deluxe."

Matt

I'v asked myself the same question a while ago, I haven't decided yet.
I like the deluxe having two humbuckers but I most dislike the flat fretboard (12 inch), it is so called better for bending but the 7,25 inch fretboard on the custom is much more comfortable for chording! They say 7,25 inch fretboards are not good for bending, they outfret easily, but I'm not so sure about that, knowing that the famous David Gilmour strat has a 7,25 inch fretboard, and he is a master in bending. I drove to at least 1O shops to compare both guitars, but none of these had the deluxe in stock...

I would play a 7.25" radius too if I could play like Gilmour. or a bunch of other vintage Strat players. with my limited skills the 9.5" or even 12" radius just seems easier to bend on. I'm old enough that I'm probably not really gonna get any better, but I keep playing. then again, 7.25" radius would not keep me from buying a vintage Strat if I hit the lottery.

I like the pic, with the cat in the case. My cat always lays on the top of my guitar case, but I've never left it open to see what would happen.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Does the Mexican version have a finished fretboard? Does the Japanese version?
