First off, hello to everyone. I'm pretty much a complete noob, so I have a lot of questions. First of all, is there a significant difference in quality of workmanship between the above mentioned guitars? What is it? Second, I read somewhere online, (I seriously wish I could remember where), that if you take off the pickguard of the American Standard model, it has space for a humbucker pickup. Is this true?

I've looked at both guitars as potential buys for my first electric, (I'm a beginner; any other suggestions?), and I figure that if the American Standard is a better quality instrument then I'll fork over the extra $230 for that one instead of the Squier Affinity. The Squier comes in Electron Blue, which the American Standard doesn't, (I really like that color, which was my main reason for considering the Squier.)

I hope this all makes sense.

Much Thanks!

Where in the world did you find an Amercan Standard Tele that only costs $230 more than a Squier Affinity Tele? From everywhere I've shopped the Affinity is roughly $170 and an American Standard is $1000.

Ehhhh, don't take it so seriously. I was actually hoping you found a little known gold mine for buying American Standard Teles cheap.

Well, at risk of sounding like I actually know what I'm talking about, there's always Ebay, i would guess. Anyway, can you tell me anything about my questions?

Well, as far as the quality of workmanship between the two, I would suspect the Standard would be better. I have heard bad stories about the Affinity products. I don't know about the humbucker routing, I know my Hwy 1 doesn't have that. Last I checked, the Standard also comes in the electron blue. If you are willing to spend the extra money, you might as well get the Standard, atleast it will have the Fender name on it.

Hopefully this helps, really you should just play both of them if you can. You may decide you like the affinity and paying out the extra money doesn't do anything for you.

A real Fender is always better than a Squire. (Unless you mod the heck out of the Squire).

Try one of the vintage modified Squier Teles. It just might surprise you!

You really have to play both because sometimes you just happen to find a guitar that feels and sounds good to YOUR ears. Also, the amp makes a big difference. A good class A tube amp can make almost any decent guitar sound good, but a decent guitar might not sound good through a cheaply built amp.

Yeah, but that's still modded. (Note the "modified" in "Vintage Modified."

in a perfect world, the standard wins hands down. Better p/us, neck, wood, etc.

However, look at JPD! He is sayin that a 170 dollar guitar is GOOD, when he is comparing it to an AMERICAN STANDARD STRAT (1,000 dollars). Find what sounds good to you, and try the vintage modified '50s.

On the other hand...

STRATS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strats are more versatile to me. I think you should play both the tele and the strat, and then decide. If i was in your position, fender MIM strat all the way!!

SOrry... ehm... so, yeah, play which tele sounds good to you.

Before I ever bought a Squier Affinity I would look and try a Squire Stadand Tele most times they are 50.00 more then the Affinity. Buy the guitar that fells best and if at all possible try the MIM Standard. I have seen Blem MIM Tele's as low as 339.00 were theres a mark in the finish and thats it.

Try them both and see which one you like better. You might be suprised... I went out a few days ago with every intention of buying a MIM Standard Tele, and ended up with a Squier Vintage Mod S-H because after playing both, I liked the Squier more. The Fender will have better resale value, but I went looking for a guitar to play, not to sell.

I'm a beginner guitarist and I was considering the Squire Tele Affinity series. What kind of bad stories have you heard? Is it really worth the extra $30 for the Standard?

The quality of workmanship was spotty on some models. This is usually alleviated by actually inspecting the specific guitar you are buying. If it is made well, then it is worth it.

Dude,
Of course all things Fender are glorious. Now that being said, always save up your pennies and buy AMERICAN. The Made in Mexico, Crafted in Indonesia etc etc are not up to the same level of quality as the American instruments. Yes they are adequate insturments and fill a market niche but they aren't the same caliber at all.

I'm not talking crap, it's just the facts. Buy the American Instrument and you won't have to upgrade to a better guitar in a year, or modify the lesser components almost immediately.

I know too many people who have tried to save a few bucks on the purchase and then spent time and money upgrading the pickups and electronics on the MIM and Squier guitars before they are satisfied with the sound.

Just my 2 cents, for what it's worth
