I am thinking of doing a modification to my Telecaster. After seeing the difference that mounting the pickup to the wood makes (Andy Summers and GE Smith models), I am thinking of taking the same route. However, I am unsure of how Fender makes the pickup adjustable. If you mount the pickup directly to the wood, it will be way too far down to really help out. Some people have told me to use foam, others have said springs, and others have told me to use a wood blank and sand it down to get the proper height. If anyone knows how Fender does it, or if you have a good way of doing it, please fill me in.

Thanks!

The springs and especialy the foam would negate any advantage of mounting the p/u directly to the body. IMO. If I was to do it I think that the wood shim would be the best. I've seen that G.E. Smith video also. What a smooth player. Peace. J.J.B.

Hello Graffitti62,

That GE Smith is one of my
gotta have guitars. Make mine blonde.

I do believe the wood shim is
your best bet. Maybe use veneering,
being thin and flat you'll be
capable of fine adjusting.

Cheers.

Guys,

I've done the mod to my James Burton Tele. I bought a 50's style bridge hacked off like G.E. Smith's and I had it sunk into the body using exactly what was there. It is raised up like G.E.'s and it turned that guitar from a decent guitar to a guitar that I will not get rid of. I can't put it down. I'm thinking about taking the chrome cover off of my neck pickup to see if that will make the sound better up top. It still sounds good, but I want to see.

Dave
