Hey guys I really like the feel of my mexi tele, but it needs some upgrades, and definately a setup, probably some locking tuners too.

My question is what should I be looking to upgrade on it in order to get more on par of an american tele?

You can make it as good as you want it to be. The only thing that would be difficult to do is duplicate the hand rolled edges of the fingerboard. Still with changing electronics and possibly tuners you can have a very fine guitar.

Hi there hithere.

it had to be said!!!!

as you can see by my post I too want to mod an MIM Tele and cant wait to get shopping for pups and pots!!!

I am willing to bet we can make for ourselves some fine Teles for a lot less than buying new Americans.

Yeah, I was wanting upgrades as well. Sure, it's quality, but what we couldn't afford then, we can afford to upgrade what we could.

I was thinking a new pickguard, an EMG telecaster setup (check it out: Emg.com then products then search for the telecaster set). It seems like an exeptable change to me.

To me anyone that switches or messes with the pickups or pots or anything electronical is taken away from the Tele's original authentic sound.

Which brings to mind. There was a post somewhere, about someone saying it's 50/50 on this forum, some people prefer to stay with the stock stuff, and the others like to make a change.

I'd personally like to make some changes to my MIM Telecaster when I get it (Christmas) But I don't intend to crush the authentic sound too much. I just want to modify it so it's my own, if you know what I mean. (I also intend on having my initials engraved on the pickguard, the same as my Squier P-Bass)

Anyway, less about my life story!
Just have a listen to as many different pickups as possible, if you like the sound of anything in particular, head down to your local store and have a look to see if they have any guitars with those specific pickups. If not, then I guess you're gonna have to trust your instincts! I definately did that with the DiMarzio X2N I had installed to my BC Rich and I don't regret a thing!

Man if you want to upgrade a MIM to American Standard why didn't you just save a little longer and buy US in the first place? Anyway:

Change out the pickups (I'm a big fan of Seymour Duncans)
Change out the wiring and pots with USA made components
Shield the pickup cavity and pickguard with copper tape or copper shielding paint.

Then you will be close
