I'm a rock musician but when I was younger I used to watch Hee-Haw every Saturday night to only see Buck Owens playing that beautiful white or blond Telecaster just to do cowboy chords on. Ha!

Buck's partner, Don Rich, was a much better player, IMO. Between the both of them, they developed that 'Bakersfield Sound.'

In 2007, Dwight Yoakam released a tribute album to Buck Owens, 'Dwight Sings Buck'.

I hear ya, is it just me, or were there many more guitarists who left us at such early stages of their careers?

Motorcycle accidents, plane crashes, suicides, substances, etc...

Don't forget about Luther Perkins, who died in a house fire.

Buck was no slouch when it came to guitar. Billy Gibbons has a black telecaster with the name Buck Owens inlayed on the fret board. Billy states that Buck had a big influence on his playing. How about Roy Clarke.. that was another guitar monster on hee-haw. I play mostly new country and classic rock. Not to mention the new country "shredders" like Brad Paisley and Brent Mason.

Only mentioned Buck because he was a Telecaster King, Roy was a great picker but he used mostly hollow body Gibsons, but man he could pick!

He sure could. You ever hear any of the jazz stuff that he could do? Absolutely blow your mind.

Alvis "Buck" Owens and Don Rich they were both good but I think even Buck new that Don was Great . They say Buck Owens took it very hard when Don died on the motorcyle in the mid 70's at such a young age.

Buck actualy started out as a guitar player and did a lot of session work in L.A. before becoming the star that he was. Don Rich was a fiddle player that Don liked and taught him to play the guitar and as good a player as Buck was , his student became better. I loved them both.

Another Tele guy was Glen Campbell and before he really hit it big with his hit singles and his own show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour which came out way back in the earlier 70s he was mostly a session musician way before this and was also doing guitar solos on a lot of the Beach Boys albums and was also ask to tour with the Beach Boys a handful of times and did.

As a kid in the 60's, I worshipped Buck Owens and the Buckaroos. I couldn't even dream of having a Fender guitar back then. My parents (god rest their souls) bought me an electric no-name guitar at the town hardware store.....strings were so high my fingers were like steel bolts .......I'm 55 now and going to have a tele real soon. Don Rich was an hounored graduate at the CA Conservatory of music. Try to find the LP "The Instrumental hits of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos" on eBay.......you'll hear allot of serious tele twangin and master fiddling by Don.

I think this was the reason my Dad bought me the telecaster back in the day. He was a big hillbilly music fan. (His words, by the way...) And one of his favorites was Buck Owens. I was just happy I was getting a professional instrument.

Don's death had a profound effect on Buck, like losing his twin brother.
