So I finely got another Telly, once I saw fender using 9.5 inch radius, I went for it, found a 6.8 pounder, and liked the grain, first impression was classic Telly tones that I was after, the build was perfect with the exception that the nitro just was not dry, it was gummy and goopy, now I know what people say when they have a gummy nitro neck, I have many nitro guitars this was different, anyway over the last month this has stopped, I did use a green scrub pad on the back of the neck, no way was I sending this light tone machine back, over that issue, seems to do the trick...
Back to tones, the 52 pickups in this guitar I never did jell with, they took a bunch of tweaking to get to sit in a mix, and somthing just didn’t feel right,
So.... my usual pickup choice is Virgil Arlos, seems he is not selling them anymore, and reverb prices are over 1k for telly pickups, I just can’t do that, so...
Installed a pair of 51 cs pickups, the guitar flat out came alive to me, much better string balance, and all positions balance better, things overall sit better in a mix as well, oddly the resistance and inductance readings on both sets were similar, the 52s were b 6.76 ohms 3.76h. 51 cs b, 6.85 ohms 3.75h, a larger difference did exist on the neck, 52, neck 7.19 ohms 1.898 h
With the cs 51 neck had 7.50 ohms and 2.115h,
I never could get a good balance with the 52 pickups , while the cs 51s balanced right off with the hight settings I usually use. Both sets sound completely different that’s for sure!
Other changes made were Rutters bridge posts in brass, and the Rutters metal switch tip. The plastic tips I hate, they fall off.... anyway at this point I cannot stop playing this guitar, And I have some great guitars to choose from , the tones I was after are right on now, so country, Bakersfield style tones, to zeppelin stuff, all very clear...and worthy of a great guitar to track with.... this will join my main go to guitars for tracking for sure.
Overall this guitar is a winner, fender does however need to work on getting finish issues taken care of...like making sure finish Is dry...lol
On the plus side of the finish, it is on my guitar anyway very thin, shows Grain in many places like an older sank in finish does.
Anyone else with a 50s American? What is your take on it?
