Hi

I recently purchased a Squier Affinity Telecaster (I am a complete Novice) and have changed the string height settings since there was a buzz. I wish I hadn't touched it now since all the string heights are now different in heights and have since learned that there should be a gentle curve from top to bottom on the string heights.

Is there an easy way to set these strings to their original height or at least a guide on how to do so.

Also, as there are 2 screws - What should the ideal settings be?

Any help is much appreciated.

Strings buzz, most of the time neck need a truss rod adjustment. It is not saddles height.

You must use a capo on first fret to take measurements

Saddle 2 screws ; saddles could be parallel to the body, or may follow neck radius. IMO it's same.

ACTION

Players with a light touch can get away with lower action; others need higher action to avoid rattles. First, check tuning. Using a 6" (150 mm) ruler, measure the distance between bottom of strings and top of the 17th fret. Adjust bridge saddles to the height according to the chart, then re-tune. Experiment with the height until the desired sound and feel is achieved.

Neck Radius String Height
Bass Side Treble Side
7.25"
9.5" to 12"
15" to 17" 5/64" (2 mm)
4/64" (1.6 mm)
4/64" (1.6 mm) 4/64" (1.6 mm)
4/64" (1.6 mm)
3/64" (1.2 mm)

To adjust the truss rod, fasten a capo to the first fret; then fret the sixth string (low E) at the last fret. Then measure from the bottom
of the string to the top of the 8th fret using the feeler gauge—the gap should be about .010”. When you view the neck by sighting down it from the body end toward the headstock, you can see whether the neck is straight or bowed.

I use car spark plug feeler gauge; cost few bucks
reading at 8th or 9th fret most of the time; une the fret where you have higher reading.
To my playing need with 0.010" strings buzz. I adjust at 0.013"

If neck bow / truss rod is not what it should, see a guitar tech to set up If you don't want to work with truss rod nut.
Truss rod adjust is not a rocket science. It is a easy job if you want to learn here

Thanks!

I visited a music shop yesterday and the guy behind the counter said he would straighten my guitar neck because that was his preference. I have been reading that guitars should have a little bit of a bow - so I was apprehensive to let him touch my guitar!

What's your opinion on the matter?

What was the curve on the neck before you see this store ? Without knowing that I can't answer.
To much curve or not enough curve; strings will buzz.

Best is you must ply the guitar in the store after job done before pay him and bring guitar home. If strings buzz, leave the guitar until the job was ok.
25 years ago I learn how to because ;

1-To many "guitar tech. don't know what they do.
2- My playing habit change , I strung harder
3- I change string gauge.
4- It is so easy to learn how to

Buy the book I show you.
If you don't want to learn how to, you will able to understand what guitar teck is talking about

Right tool are cheap;

Allen key set; see Home Depot for complete set metric and SAE ; I bought Husky brand ( $20 )
Car spark plug gauge $3-$4 ; check it have 0.010- 0.012 and 0.013 gauge

I agree with just about everything st52 says above, but I'd go with about half the relief recommended, even less.
It's an Affinity, and those tend to have very flexible necks - they just need proper support from the truss rod to play well.
So instead of a .010" (around 0,25 mm) feeler gauge, use a slice of your ordinary printer/copy paper as the feeler gauge; when it just slides between the 8th fret and the string, you're in the .005"/0,1 mm ballpark.

The saddles themselves should be level, i.e. both screws should be adjusted to the same height.
You don't want them angled.
The two saddles in the middle will be higher than the others, and the two on the ends the lowest.
The string height should be roughly the same across the neck, maybe a bit higher on the bass side.

All this is also a matter of taste.

We can tell you how to make a coffee. After you know, you may like it stronger or lighter....

Know how guitar work, with good books or videos, and you'll know why and how things work.
After you'll be able to tune your guitar for your need.
