Looking for some help here. This photo below is my 2001 USA telecaster and whilst playing it this evening, the varnish/laquer just came off in my hand! I now and looking for some advice on how to repair it. I dont want to sand it all back and have a bare neck, I simply want to repair it. Can anyone tell me what I should use? I have seen the youtube vids on wire wool and fine sandpaper but any advice would be good, also if anyone can recommend a product I can use to re-laquer it?

Any help much appreciated.

First, you have to remove ( sand ? ) the varnish where it came off.
Before putting new varnish.

By the look of that neck I'd say you're fighting a loosing battle. It looks as though more will start coming off in a short space of time. It looks like the only thing to do is refinish the whole neck.

I'm by no means an expert but I've seen a lot of paint and lacquer in my time and am just telling you what I see in the photo.

One more thing, a repair to that kind of chipping is close-to-impossible to get to a level where your hand doesn't feel it.
I'd go the sjlen way; sand the whole (back of the) neck, then either leave as is, or nitro it.

I agree, you'd be chasing your tail most likely. Looks like its checked or cracking all along the grain from your picture.
I would strip sand to bare wood, apply a double coat of sanding sealer, level/scuff sand and use a can of nitro satin lacquer on it 4 or 5 coats is plenty.
PS: remove the neck from the body, tape off the fret board/side dots and remove the tuners. Be careful around the headstock decal or tape it off.
3 or 4 day project if you let dry over night between sanding sealer and lacquer.

More like two to three weeks if you use nitro and subject to your drying conditions.
