I am doing some fret work on my Fender Standard Telecaster. The fret dots almost seem to be painted on. I was hoping to replace the dots after sanding, but if they can't be replaced I do not want to wreck them. What are my options?

Fret job has nothing to do with neck dots.
Replacing and installing frets does not require touching fret board dots. A strange question.

Or I don't understand what you write ?

Well, as I pull the frets some very minor chipping has occurred. I planned on sanding down the neck and applying a new coat of stain. I thought if the fret dots were actually glued in I would just replace them. However, if they are painted on I have to re-think my strategy. I have removed fret dots before using a small wood screw. If they are painted on I do not want to screw into the neck.

Matt

Unless Fender has made a secret, drastic change, the dots are black plastic about 1/8" thick.

Fender ( or any guitar builder ) never use paint, it won't last

Stew Mac say 1.5 mm = less than 3 /16 "

I've read that at least one of the P or Jazz Basses with maple boards and black big block inlays was done with paint rather than being true inlays.

Some current Recording King acoustics have painted "inlays" on bare rosewood fretboards. Stella's, Montgomery Ward -- used to be common on cheaper brands.

Some '80s asian knockoffs had painted dots. Under a thick layer of poly they last forever and look just like real inlays.
