I just bought a 'sight unseen' tele with headstock marked MIJ & an 'O' plus six digits serial. My concern is that the stings do not go through the body (but are simply top loaded). Is this a real Fender, or have I been duped?

PLEASE SEE MY ADDITIONAL COMMENTS BELOW.

Sounds like it is, a Japanese one. Any more info?

Many Fender Telecasters have top loaders. That said, it's hard to say, with only the info you've given and no photos, if this is, in fact, the real deal.

I don't know about the serial number on it but I had a telecaster mij in the 90's that was like that.

Thanks for your responses... very much appreciated... Even though I was told that this Tele was a 2000 issue, the 'O' plus six digits serial number means it should be 1994-95 (?), so that ties with vwralph's reply. Also, I forgot to mention that it has GOTOH machine heads, which I have seen listed on one other MIJ Tele. Hey, but most importantly... this is one sweet little guitar, so I am only asking out of curiosity... not anger!

I would still really appreciate any further assistance the global 'Fender Family' could lend with my expanded questions re my REAL DEAL Telecaster.

that is the only picture I have of my telecaster. Notice it says made in japan on the headstock and since I got it brand new at the shop you can believe it is a top loader from the beginning. The serial numbers are on it but I can't read them out of the picture. That is all I know.

This indicates that an O serial number is 1993-1994:

I'm guessing your Fender is real, but the date you were told might not be accurate...

Sounds like a MIM body with a MIJ neck?
Hard to tell without more info.

my mij was a top loader and it was new when I bought at a very reputable dealer. I played it in high school around 1989 or so. I think my tuners gotoh ones too.

I believe the '59 tele's were top loaders and Jim Campilongo (guitar phenom) plays on a 59 toploader exclusively. It is my understand some of the significant reissues (example is the recent pink paisley reissue) come out of Fender Japan. Its possible your tele is a 59 reissue or perhaps loosely inspired by that era. The only way to know for sure is remove the neck. The neck will be stamped with a code that indicates the model and thus will let you know if your tele is "the real deal."

If you share the neck code, we can help you identify your guitar. In addition to the stamp, there is likely a date on the neck and even the body.

Don't let that scare you about the Tele's strings loading through the bridge on top rather than through the back of the guitar cause there were Tele's that had that bridge where the strings loaded through the bridge.
