I am new to the Fender family- got my first ever Telecaster and 62 Princeton amp for a big birthday gift!! I just love them!!! Got the American Original 60’s Tele in Lake placid blue!! The neck is gorgeous and she plays wonderfully!!! But I got it from Sweetwater in the mail. I noticed a neck joint crack. They have been truly great on customer service and offered to exchange it or discount it. I chose discount and keep it. It’s on the low E side. Is this pretty normal? Or should this never happen on a brand new guitar and I should return it? Thanks for any advice! Regardless of the crack it is a wonderful instrument and I just love the tone and response and playability of this guitar!!! [img][/img]

If you already opted for the discount and keep, it's probably too late to change your mind. On a brand new guitar, my choice (IMHO...) would have been return and exchange.

But words of comfort (the DON'T PANIC section, without a towel):
Many older Teles have that kind of a crack. If it's only on the finish, there's nothing to worry about. Same with minor cracks in the wood. And even the biggest-mothers-of-all-cracks can be repaired.

The guys at Sweetwater are sending a replacement to compare it to and give me the option to return! They really have been awesome! I also had the guitar inspected by a Fender certified technician. He said it was in finish and I had 2 really good pieces of wood that fit well together! The neck is actually beyond spec on straightness! It also has a unique wood grain pattern on back of neck. How can I post pics on here?

You have to upload pictures to a picture sharing site. I use Flickr.com Once you upload pictures there click on a pic and select the sharing icon (looks like an arrow). Then select the "BB code" option which looks like a website link that you can post in a response. Don't know if that makes sense but that's how i do it.

First you need to upload your pics to the internet. Use a pic hosting site (imgur, imgbb or such - avoid photobucket) or some common web framework like e.g. facebook, googlephotos - whatever you're familiar with.
The important thing is that the web site provides you with a pic address - that's the one starting with 'http' or 'https' and ending in '.jpg' .

Copy the pic address, and use the IMG-command (visible when you write a message) on the forum.

Preview your post so everything is OK.

This strikes me as BS...How can you have a tolerance on straightness when something is meant to be straight? ...But none the less.

It does sound like Sweetwater have gone above and beyond the call of duty here and I am very impressed.

There is every possibility the crack is only in the finish is down to lacquer shrinkage. But, if it annoys you now, it will annoy you every time you pick up the guitar until such time as it has so many battle scars that you no longer think about it.

The spec on bow or straightness of neck has to be within a certain amount of what is acceptable. This is beyond that.

Sorry I read it as better than specification not outside of tolerance.

It sounds like there is little to discuss.

I fixed it. I had to make the pics settings public. The tech said he was surprised I even saw it and I got a really good deal. I just know it kills the resale value. But I do believe it’s only in the finish and the neck is super straight because this thing sounds great and stays in tune! It’s a really tough decision. In the FB link I showed the back of the neck because it is unique. I believe the swirling ring of wood grain is from where a branch was. It looks really cool! If it wasn’t for that tiny hairline crack this would be a sure thing keeper!
