Does anyone know why Fender decided to not install a string tree on the new Fender American Acoustasonic Telecaster? Is it because of the 80/20 phosphor/bronze acoustic strings? Isn't the geometry of the nut and the headstock the same as a regular tele? Just curious.

Staggered height tuners sort out the string break angle over the nut.
It has nothing to do with string type.

Good question. I've already encountered the problem of the high-E popping out on my Acoustasonic - something I've heard from others. Am wondering if I need to have my local Guitar Center tech install a string tree and, if so, is there any downside?

I’m having the same problem, very annoying at gigs, I think a string tree is the only solution

These things sound fabulous! No string tree required.

Apparently those who own them disagree with you.

I find it strange that a Tele neck on a Tele needs a string tree and yet on this, Fender feel that it doesn't.

I also think it strange that an instrument of this value has issues.

Changing to a taller nut with deeper cut grooves could solve the problem but who wants to change the nut on a new guitar.

If one of the two complainers would care to post a video it would allow us to see the circumstances in which the strings pop out.

Here's another superb video. No string trees.

I had the "Fender Elite String Tree" installed at Fender's expense after they acknowledged this was a problem for some players. The chrome finish matches the tuners so the looks were not compromised. Even though this was only an occasional problem (the E popping out), I'm glad I had it done.

I really like this one. Talent Galore. Notice no string trees.

We get it; Fender makes promotional videos of the guitar without string trees.

That doesn't alter the fact that apparently some actual owners, who paid out a slab of their own money, are having problems.

Perhaps those owners strum enthusiastically? So what? It's a guitar and if the owners want to strum like the Devil himself demands it (for that money) the guitar should be up to it.

There's strumming enthusiastically, and then there's being hamfisted and thrashing and bashing the thing.
I have a feeling that the two owners moaning here fall into the latter category.
The thing to consider is that it isn't a guitar that's going to be loud, and to get the best of it it needs to be plugged in.
If it's plugged in and needs to be louder you turn the amp up.
You don't need to beat on the thing.

I don't expect to see video footage of the problem occurring with normal playing.

I have a couple of the new Acoustasonics I use live and i was always popping the e out. FWIW my guy at Fender said they were making a running change and putting trees on all of them. He sent a couple of the nice chrome trees with very specific location instructions for installation. Totally solved the issue for me. I noticed Jack White's Custom Shop version had one as well.
