I recently got a 72 Tele Deluxe RI and I absolutely love it.

The only thing I might want to change is the bridge saddles. The stock ones are barrel-style saddles with no notches in them. I have found that the strings slide from side to side a bit, especially if doing lots of bends, which can mess up the spacing and, in the case of the outer two strings (low E and high E in standard tuning), cause them to slip off the edge of the fretboard.

Would swapping the saddles out for notched ones change the sound and feel of the guitar much? Is there a reason integral to the Telecaster sound that they are made with barrel saddles?

Also, is this an easy job to do?!

Thanks!
Ash.

If you think notches will work, why don't you do some with a file ? So easy.

You can get compensated saddles that help with intonation, or as Stratele52 said, you can file notches into what you have and not have to buy anything more than a file.

The original Tele saddles were made from threaded rod that's available from any hardware store. Later "refinements" brought the basic cylinder.
