Hi,

In 1971 or 72, when I bought my thinlline, it didn't have humbuckers or a precision bridge. After working with it for several months I found it lacking in "chunk" and the intonation was a little wacky. I took it back to Chuck Levin's and had their guitar tech put two humbuckersand a precision bridge in.

Some years later (and now from Fender re-released as a "Classic") I see the mod I had done way, way back then, but with different humbuckers.

FTR, when did Fender actually get around to making the thinline with humbuckers and a precision bridge?

Regards,

Ty Ford

You just missed it. The Thinline Tele received the Seth Lover-designed humbuckers in late '71 or early '72.

Heh,

Missed it? Not to take any steam away from Seth, but I always thought I sort of "invented" it. The guy at Chuck Levin's looked a t me a bit weirdly when I first asked about the mod, but shrugged and said, "no problem."

Mine's #267657. How do you upload a pix here?

I don't know what pick ups he put on. Maybe someone could help me identify them if I posted a pix.

I had friends back then who, really liked mine. In fact Dave Loomis liked it so much he had one made up just like mine. I think he sold it sometime later.

Where is Seth from?

Seth Lover invented the humbucking pickup in 1955 while working at Gibson. He designed the Wide Range humbucking pickup for Fender (used in the Thinline, Custom, and Deluxe Teles) about 15 years later.

I recall quite a few players (Terry Kath/Chicago, Keith Richards/Rolling Stones, etc.) who were putting Gibson humbuckers in the neck position of their Telecasters at the beginning of the '70s.

Terry even installed a Strat vibrato on his.
