Guitar Center is running sale right now and I am considering picking up either the Fender Special Edition Deluxe Ash Telecaster for $549 or the G&L Limited Edition Tribute ASAT Classic for $349. I know this is a Fender forum but curious as to anyone's opinion on these. I obviously save $200 with the G&L but am I sacrificing quality or just buying the name?

The Fender is made in Mexico

G& L ; Made in Indonesia, pickups are G& L desing ( not G& L )

I'll go for the Fender

You might find this interesting. I was all up for a G&L, the whole evolution of Fender and all that, but now I'm not so sure.

The far eastern made ones are obviously very cheap, but I'm not sure they are necessarily "good value cheap" compared to just "cheap."

If they're in Guitar Centre then you have the opportunity to play them, so play them both and see which feels best, which sounds best etc, I'd suggest playing them then taking a few days to think about it before you make your decision.

Good luck and don't forget to post pics when you get it home.

This... and I'm a HUGE fan of Fullerton-built G&L... I have two from the mid-90s.
I would love to have a Fullerton ASAT.

But between a G&L Tribute and MiM Fender... that's basically (and possibly, literally depending on if G&L and Fender contract with the same source) comparing a MiM fender to a Squier.

$550 for an MiM is a good deal for a good guitar.

A Fender guitar may have a better resale value than a G& L

I'm not so sure about the cheap ones. G&L's used to drop like a stone but they seem to be enjoying a rise in popularity. I am seeing second hand Indonesian built ASATs being offered for not short of the price of new ones... not that I have followed the offers to see if the ultimately sold.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'm leaning towards the Fender. From you tube samples I think it sounds better and prefer the ash body over the basswood. I will play them both and let you know what I decide.

Fender Special Edition Deluxe Ash Telecaster would be my choice of the two.

<<If they're in Guitar Centre then you have the opportunity to play them...>>

Guitar Center also has a 45 day return policy with only a few reasonable strings attached.

Post was from 3 weeks ago... sale is likely over. The Tribute ASAT series is now listed at $450, $500 for natural with tortoise PG.
