I have the chance to have this MIJ tele (80’s) at a very reasonable price. Trouble is, a previous owner had a go at aging it, results speak for themselves :(

It’s polyeurathane finish.

Any suggestions for restoring or repainting it to former glory? I have little confidence with spay cans

Oh - I’m to old to figure out how to add an image
Basically - someone has orbital sanded the upper edges of the bouts back to the raw wood, a strip several inches wide. It looks aweful.

Thanks in advance

Sorry for being blunt, and speaking only for myself of course, but without pics the answer is just "fix it", which gets you nowhere...

So here's how:
Quote:
First you need to upload your pics to the internet. Use a pic hosting site (imgur, imgbb or such - avoid photobucket) or some common web framework like e.g. facebook, googlephotos - whatever you're familiar with.
The important thing is that the web site provides you with a pic address - that's the one starting with 'http' or 'https' and ending in '.jpg'.

Copy the pic address, paste it to your post and use the IMG-command (visible when you write a message) on the forum.

Preview your post so everything is OK.

There are a lot of old geezers on here (myself included) and we have no problem posting pictures.

Guitar bodies are no different to any other bit of wood and the secret of a good finish is preparation, preparation and preparation.

Part cut through PU is likely to cause issues because of the interface between the relatively thick PU on the wood. This could mean completely stripping the body may be necessary. This will be extremely time consuming.

Also don't underestimate the cost of materials. For a first job this will not just be the three or four cans of lacquer but all the various grades of sand paper, polishing mediums, grain filler and a good mask. This will all run to in excess of £/$100.

All this being the case, and your declared lack of confidence in spraying, you are probably best to consider a pre finished replacement body.

A BTW here; old MIJ Fenders (body finish) are usually polyester, some (vintage correct etc.) models nitro.
