Looking for some advice.

I have the opportunity to pick up a ‘77 Deluxe in excellent condition. The finish is ridiculously thick but if I buy it I’ll be looking to strip it and refinish it in nitro. My question is regarding the quality of the electrical components in these later CBS era Tele’s, particularly the Wide Range pickups. Are they likely to suffer any QC issues in comparison to say, a ‘73 Deluxe? Thanks.

And as a result remove any value the guitar may have. If the finish bothers you then get a new body (or a replacement and finish that) and put the original in a box in its current form.

Have you played it? How do they sound...if not, play it 1st!
I would do what John said regarding a re-finish, not worth it. Not only is it extremely difficult to remove the Poly finish, but re-sale would cost you as easy thousand.
The electrical components were standard for the times, American made. The wire coatings are sometimes very brittle or very stiff.
I don't have anything w/ WR buckers, no opinion.

I don't claim to be an expert on the matter. But IMHO&E(xperience), in general the seventies Teles from any year were quality instruments. Then again, an individual instrument may have gotten all the flaws which describe the CBS era… So you really need to get to know the particular candidate before buying it.

On the refin plans, I'd agree with the "PLEASE DON'T!" opinions above. It is what it is...

This.
While you may be looking at a very good deal, keep in mind that this guitar could be worth as much as a new American Elite or even more.
You can buy a new American Professional Deluxe for $1500. It's still poly, but if you have it refinished in nitro, you won't be significantly reducing the value of a 42 year old guitar.

Please don't.
