Yesterday, after having it maybe 2 weeks tops, I nicked the finish of my Telecaster while swapping guitars on a stand. The horns on my Epiphone SG put a small crack in the finish on the edge of the guitar, where the back binding would be on a Les Paul. I'm freaking out as to whether this will be a problem later on, with moisture or temperature changes or whatever else comes my way. I've seen Blackie, and John Paul Jones' Jazz Bass, and they are chipped like no tomorrow, so I might not have anything to worry about, but still.

The model is a 2008 (MIM) Standard Telecaster. If anyone has any advice or information about what I should, or shouldn't do, please let me know. Thanks :?

My advise is to let it be and enjoy playing it.

Hello FenderTelecaster14,

And so the evolution of
a true relic begins.

Best of luck with it.

Cheers.

Yeah, I guess it is supposed to get worn and aged looking, but I was sort of expecting that to occur maybe 2 years into playing the guitar, not 2 weeks. I'm still paying the damn thing off. :(

Nicks and chips only add character to a guitar. Kinda tells a story, IMO

Exactly, it's telling a story and in 50 years time it'll remind you of that couple o weeks, I got some nicks n' it makes my baby who she is!
Enjoy!

Ya, but that first nick is always a hard one. I remember the first ding I got on my tele. It was a dent in the chrome of the pickup. Just a little ding, but I noticed it right away and I was like "dang..now its not perfect anymore".

But then I thought to myself "Now its my tele and no one else's".

The more cracks, the more you've been out there :) My '72 Mustang looks like the surface of Mars these days and even some of the newer ones would never pass for "closet classics."

The only time I have anything repaired is a ding on the neck that would affect playability or that might eventually cause a crack. Other than that, I let 'em age just like me.

I just bought a brand new Strat and if I knicked that I'd be pissed! I wouldn't even trust it with a guitar tech. You never know if they can slip with the screwdriver or lay it down on some cutoff string bits!

I'm probably the same way. I don't like the "Relic" look, although I would rather be the one who put the dings and nicks into the guitar, rather than Fender, and pay a high price for the damage.

I know it will happen to my guitars sooner or later (especially if you use them all the time). But I would like to have it happen at least six months after I buy it. People always make fun of me for being so careful about all my stuff, but that's just me, and I can't help it.

Functionally, I don't think you'll have a problem. Just look at some of the stars out there and have "trashed" guitars and keep on playing concerts with them.
