Hello everyone. I bought a modern player Telecaster recently. The plan was to mod it. New pickups, new bridge, new tuners, etc. I was trying to replace the nut today with a new tusq nut. The old nut was glued in so much, when I was tapping on it with a punch, I broke the nut slot. Yeah, I know... I should have just paid someone to do it. But I'd done this procedure before without a hitch. Anyways, now I need to add a new neck to the mod list.

My question is what type of tele neck do I need to replace this with? It's made in China, so I doubt a US or Mexican neck would fit it without some alterations. Or maybe they would work. Hopefully one you good people can point me in the right direction.

Any traditional MiM or MiA Tele neck *should* fit, with the one caveate that the standard Tele neck pocket is squared off, while the Strat and other pockets are rounded.
Any neck should fit the Tele (will have gaps in the corners), but the Tele neck will not fit the Strat, or other guitars.

Check your heel and see which one is correct. All Strat/Tele necks are 25.5" scale.
Fender sells replacement necks with the headstock logo for $200-$250 for MiM, and $500-$620(bound!) for MiA.

Nope, AFAIK the Modern Player is one of the rare models which has a 22 fret neck with no "lip" (overhang), so regular necks don't fit. It's even listed on the Warmoth exceptions list.

Is the nut groove really destroyed? Small(ish) cracks & chips are usually repairable - maybe use a pro this time.

Other options... Well, it gets tricky.
Getting another MP neck obviously - those are sometimes available on reverb, stratosphereparts, ebay & such - if you're lucky.
Or a regular 21 fret neck and moving the bridge to get the intonation right.
And maybe a 22 fret regular Tele neck could be used, fitted with a piece of maple to fill the gap under the lip.

Hi,
If the fretboard is not repairable, I think a different style of nut would be less expensive than a new neck. For example, a locking type nut or a wider nut, like a Gibson LP has. These nuts will require fitting so be careful not to further damage the fretboard.
Best of luck, Ross
