Got this reply from a senior Fender USA rep:


The string alignment is not always 100% directly on top of the pole piece. The reason in this particular case is that we use the Duncan pickups, and the Pearly Gates, which is used on that guitar was originally designed for Gibsons, which have a narrower spacing. So come design time, we either had to offset the pickups, which would look odd, or have the pickups aligned together and the bridge treble strings slightly off. This should not afect sound though. If you'll notice on any other Fender guitar that uses Fender pickups, the strings are aligned with the pole pieces.


Still not really acceptable as they photoshop the press images to look perfect. Makes sense given this model is basically trying to sound and play like a Les Paul but look like a Fender - which is just what I was after.
