Hello all

I'm hoping that someone might be able to assist. I've got a lovely Squier Classic Vibe Tele. However, being intrigued as to how I might mod it a little, I was wondering if I can replace the current volume/tone control panel with an S1 one from a Baja?

If so, would the original pups work with it? To me, they already sound pretty good.

Just thinking this might make it a little more versatile without spending loads of cash on a Squier....

Thanks!

The original pickups will not offer the same functionality. The Baja uses the Texas Specials and the neck pickup is a 3-conductor:
https://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Orig ... ickups.pdf
You can *probably* replace the whole thing, but now you're looking at $160 for the pickups plus the S1 volume pot.
It may or may not fit, as some Squier models are routed with a smaller control cavity that won't accept the full-sized pots, and may not be deep enough for the S1 stacked on the pot.
You would also need to replace the 3-position switch with a 4-position switch.

I'm absolutely no wiring guru, so proceed with caution. But isn't a three wire neck pickup just coil positive (=hot) /coil negative (= cold, or "fake" ground) and "true" ground..?
And anyways, on a metal covered pickup, the three wire convert is possible: https://www.fralinpickups.com/2018/05/2 ... wire-neck/

But one thing to note: the S1 isn't the easiest part to work with (well, IMHO - remember the no wiring guru; old; reluctant against anything non-vintage…), so I predict it's going to be on the verge of a nightmare if it's to be un-&re-soldered…

There may be simpler ways to proceed, so what kind of combinations are you looking for?

Question is - why?
The Baja S1 gives you 'out of phase' which can be achieved with a push-pull pot.
The 4 way switch gives the series option.

As for pickups the Baja has a Twisted Tele neck and Broadcaster bridge which are not available as a set.
Same applies to the Baja 60s which has a '52 neck and '58 bridge.

The Classic Vibe neck pickup will need some modification for series switching. It's a case of removing the short soldered wire between the pickup cover tab and the black ground wire and soldering a new length of wire to the cover tab going to the common ground solder point so the cover is grounded.

Not my intention at all, this time or ever. 8)
If you refer to the two/three wires, I merely meant it's an obstacle that can be overcome.
If you point to my perception of the S1 complicity, I only tell about my own comfort zone borders.

If you're uncomfortable about DIY the Baja mod, contact an expert to do the job for you.

Hello all

Thanks to all who have taken the time to respond. It seems that this DIY idea might be one undertaken by someone else. Cost and time wise, it seems more sensible to sell the CV and buy a Baja instead!

The knowledge you lot have is incredible!

Unless you get a buzz (hopefully not literally) out of mods, and some of us do, selling would be the most sensible. The CV is a much respected guitar so (unmodified) you should get a reasonable price for it.

If you do start modding the value will drop dramatically and you certainly wouldn't recover the money spent in anything but enjoyment. I appreciate we aren't talking big money but half of not very much is approaching almost nothing at all.

Another solution is to purchase a loaded pickguard from Sigler 920D.

Unless you keep the CV and throw in a prewired pickguard from Sigler 920D.
