So, I just bought a used 2017 50's Road Worn Tele (MIM) in vintage blonde and I didn't notice this while playing it in the store but this thing has a strong, nasty odor to it. It almost seems to be a mixture of the paint/finish and the pickguard. Seems like the pickguard has a much stronger (and different) odor to it than the body. Is the pickguard material on this model made of something other than plastic? And, the smell is not coming from the case, it's the guitar. I've cleaned, polished, etc. and it's still there. I'm at a loss. Anybody else experienced this? Thanks so much.

The Road-Worn is finished in Nitrocellulose Lacquer rather than Polyurethane.
The paint will continue to off-gas and shrink for a few months.

I'm wondering if they used some type of solvent based cleaner at the guitar shop that has combined with the surface of the lacquer. What ever it should pass in time.

You really need to stand it in a corner, not on a stand and not in a case as both may mark the lacquer if it has been softened. You shouldn't stand a nitro finish guitar on a stand with foam rubber covered arms as the nitro reacts at any time in its life.

You also shouldn't wax it (oh you already did) as the wax will trap the solvents.

Give it time, the smell will pass or you will become nose blind to it.

Otherwise, an outstanding guitar. I love my Road Worn Strat and would love to catch a Road Worn Tele.

Thanks for the replies. It's been out of the case since the day I bought it on August 4th. It's about to me 3 months that I've owned it and it has gotten better but still stinks. I eventually put a new pick guard on it since the original pick guard smelled like sour milk. The new pick guard smells fine. Otherwise, I love the guitar. Plays, sounds, feels and looks GREAT!!!
