So I bought a Custom Shop Telecaster (50s NOS Nocaster) about 6 months ago and absolutely love it. My only issue is that despite owning many Fender guitars I have never experienced a finish like the one on this Tele. To say it's thin would be a massive understatement, you just have to look at it in the wrong way and you lose a chunk of it. It already looks far more beat up than a Strat i've owned for 18 years and that's only after 6 months!

My question is whether this is simply all part of the Fender 'Thin Skin' nitro deal or whether the finish might not have cured properly or something?

Unfair comment - you haven't mentioned which Strat it is that you've had 18 years.

There are a couple of possibilities - you might have encountered a stealth relicing program from Fender (hey guys, I have a novel idea! Let's give a guitar a new finish and let the customer play it and relic it themselves - it'll look far more authentic that way!), or they may have not finished your guitar properly.

I'd suspect it's the latter, so get in touch with the CS dealer you bought the guitar from and make a complaint.

The square projecting edges of a Tele are far more likely to wear, or get knocked, than the smooth contours of a Strat, so it isn't really a fair comparison.

Similarly, if the 18 year old Strat is finished in Poly it will shrug off anything other than the hardest impact and probably wont wear through in 50 years.

So not really comparing apples with apples.

And finally, the big selling point of the thin skin Nitro finishes is they are meant to wear and demonstrate that you have used them...so really it is just doing what it said on the tin.

All that said, how do you quantify what is acceptable wear and what is just a faulty finish? From what you have said (despite the unfair comparison) it may be the finish is more susceptible to damage than might be acceptable and it would be worth contacting Fender directly to query this. After all, this is not a cheap guitar.

Relicing won't affect playability.
