Hi

I just acquired through trade a Fender Telecaster Custom 72 MIM from 2007. This is the one with the single bridge pickup, and the wide range humbucker in the bridge, and the pickup switch in a similar position to a LP.

For some reason the previous owner decided to place in the bridge a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails. (I don't know why so many people are putting in the bridge a hot rails).

I want to remove the hot rails and place a more classic Telecaster single pickup. This is the sound I want. Also a pickup that can match well with the neck pickup. I have no idea what kind of pickup these guitars usually have. My other telecasters have super low output bridge pickups, and I wonder if a custom needs some beefier.

Anyway, I welcome suggestions! What kind of pickup should I put? I want a single pickup, but maybe a bit hot. But I still want classic telecaster sounds.

If you wanted single coils, then why buy that model of Tele? I believe it is originally a double humbucker.
My bad, you said custom in the title wide range neck and single coil bridge....Same advice though although you may need to replace the bridge pot/capacitor also!
If your going to keep a humbucker in the neck, I would suggest putting a "slightly" beefier single coil in the bridge. Get a good ohm reading from the neck pup and decide from there how much hotter you want the bridge pup.
There are plenty of choices out there, but if you want something in the lower output range you definitely wanna find something close to what you have in the neck.

The original pickup would have been part number 0053676000; "Pickup, Assy. Mex Vint. Tele Bridge" which is used in many other 'classic' style Teles also.
The Wide Range Humbucker is the Mexican version, which has an almost gibsonisque character - not like the original WRH's single coilish nature. I agree with sfceric64 that it might profit from a similarly hottish bridge pickup. Do they sell Twisted Tele bridge only..? Or outside Fender, you can't go wrong with Lollars - maybe Special T...

No biggie, I was only quoting the service diagram.
Here's a link to the SD in the support pages, for "upgrade 2005" and after (well, actually the wiring is the same in earlier Custom 72's...) models, in case you need some other part numbers: https://p4.zdassets.com/hc/theme_assets ... A_SISD.pdf
