Hi all,

Greeting from Thailand. First of all, sorry for my poor English.

I am totally new to electric guitar. Never own one in my life until recently. I bought this used guitar and now having problems figuring it out on how to clean it. I browse through the internet and found out that there are soooooo many do and don't when it comes to cleaning electric guitar due to its wood and finished. I have attached photos of my guitar. I just purchased the Music Nomad cleaning set, which contains The Guitar One, Guitar Polish, and F-One Oil.

A person told me that my neck is finished maple, as a result I cannot use product with oil on it. Also the body, I don't what kind of finished this is, so I have no ideas what will be the proper way to clean it.

Can you guys please help advise the proper products that I can use with my guitar?

Any suggestions would greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Grasoon

Guitar One is a good product and is really all you need.
If very dirty (yours is not) you can use naptha (lighter fluid) to cut the grunge.
The finish on your body and neck protect the wood from drying out, so you do not need fretboard oil like you would with a rosewood neck, and even at that, most people use too much oil on their rosewood necks. It is really only needed once per year. Too much can cause harm, I had an Epiphone Les Paul where some of the neck inlays popped loose.

Hi Rich,

Thank you very much for your advise. It is really appreciated. For your comment about Guitar ONE, you mean that I can use it on both body and neck?

Thank you again for your help

Best regards,
Grasoon

Sure.
It's just wood with a nitro or poly clear finish.
Maple-necked guitars have always been popular not only because they are more economical to manufacture, but also because they are easier to maintain.

Very nice guitar Sir.

It looks like the vendor has already cleaned it so I wouldn't worry too much in the short term. It will certainly get much grubbier with use.

The guitar is completely covered in lacquer so, aside the metal bits, treat it like any lacquered furniture except go easy with any wax. Unlike furniture you don't want to build up a layer of wax as this can hamper your playing and even become sticky which would be extremely bad. Even using a damp cloth will be fine assuming you dry it off immediately after.

If getting really picky the frets could perhaps do with a polish but the crowns will clean up with playing quite quickly so I probably wouldn't bother myself.

My main view is a guitar is a tool for making music. Provided dirt and grime doesn't impede the primary objective I don't worry about it to much. I like to give a new second hand guitar a good clean as I don't want to be involved in someone elses dirt and grime but, after that, just play it and enjoy it.

Mine tend to get tide marks of dried sweat on the body which I clean off with a damp cloth periodically and I will clean the neck at string changes if needed (including oiling a rosewood neck if needed). I don't change strings very frequently though.

Some will wipe down the neck and body with a towel (or microfiber cloth now) after playing. This is certainly good practice but I don't bother. I never have so it hasn't become part of the ritual of playing.

I would suggest a foam type multi-grade nail buffer to help keep the frets clean followed by a soft cloth polish.
I use a dab of Brasso on the cloth if needed for a good luster, I tape off the fretboard once a year and polish this way.

The body is never cleaned. The pickguard sometimes, yeah, especially between pickups.

If you need to clean the body, use some damp cotton cloth, and that's it. You don't want to damage it.

Thank you all for your help.

Anyway, is it true that we should not left our guitars without strings?
