So I bought this guitar online and sent it back, then they sent me another one. The problem is that the 1st tele had a knot in the back of the neck. It wasnt a brown circle knot but more of the side of a knot where the grain followed the side of the branch. I sent it back and got another one. The replacement came and Ive played it for 4 days. The neck grain looks straight but I like the sound of the 1st one with the curved grain. So Im not sure what is the differance is is it the neck on the 1st one that I like the most, or is it the electronics and the second has an electronic deficiency. The B and E string was alot fuller on the 1st guitar. I dont know what to do. Is it the guitar neck that makes the 1st one sound better or is it the pickups pots and wiring job on it. Just dont have a clue please help.
Its a Fender Special Edition Deluxe Ash Telecaster Maple Fretboard Butterscotch Blonde mim.
Thks

Defects with wiring (and other that type issues) usually cause bigger problems than sound difference with two strings.
So, my first guess is that the setup is different; minor changes here and there may result in big sound differences.

Do (or have a good pro do) a full setup, with new strings - and experiment with pickup heights & tilting.

As JM notes, there are so many aspects which may impact on the sound of a guitar.

You sight the neck as being different but then the body is different as well. As noted the PUP set up may be different. Two identical specification guitars are unlikely to sound exactly the same because of an ocean of possible variables.

If you can isolate why you prefer A over B at least you have a starting point which a set up may be able to chase.

While there are people who believe wood doesn't contribute to the amplified sound of a solidbody guitar, my own experience is that it certainly does.

But as pointed out by the others, there are lots of variables besides the neck. The difference is likely to be a combination of many factors. Even how well the nut slots are cut.

However, even if the difference was entirely due to the necks, it wasn't the knot that made the first one better sounding. It would be the grain orientation, the density, the stiffness of that piece of maple, not the knot.

A knot in a neck has the potential to cause future problems. Warping, humps, twists. Assuming that was an actual knot and not just some unusual figuring in the grain, you don't want that first neck back.

The last time I went shopping for a brand new guitar, I made a list of the Strat models I was interested in. Then I went to 6 stores and played a dozen Strats. Nine of them sounded basically the same. Two of them didn't sound as good as the rest. One of them sounded better than the rest.

Had I just blindly bought on-line, I would have been satisfied with any of them. Unless I got one of the "bad" ones, returned it, and got the "good" one as a replacement (or vice versa).

My advice is to try again. Return that guitar for a third one. You'd always worry about the knot on the first one, and you'll never be satisfied with the second one knowing that it doesn't sound as good.

Sound advice. Owing a guitar is a very emotional thing and once you decide you don't like something about a guitar it is very difficult to come back from it.

I have a really great looking Strat but it never gets played because I have decided I don't like the way it feels. I periodically pick it up thinking I must be imagining it and not to be so silly. Within quite a short period I have confirmed (or convinced myself) that I still don't like it.

Well I tried the adjusting the pickup hieght and it didnt seem to make it sound better. So I called the company and they agreed to send me another one as long as pay the return shipping. Wow this is great news so I hop I get a decent one. This will be intersting to play 3 of the same guitars models. I hope it sounds more like the 1st one. This 2nd one just sounds thin to me.
The 1st one was an open box Could someone put differnt strings on the 1st one

Almost the first thing most experience players do when they get a new guitar.

An open box could equally mean the shop set the guitar up for you.

So many possibilities. So many variables.

I received my new telecaster guitar this Thursday the 12th. My third one of the same model. Oh man its a keeper, I love it. Playing it through a black star 1 watt tube amp it has such a texture to the sound w ith the treible backed off. This guitar sounds like the first guitar they sent me a little brighter. The e and b string have a thick full sound to them. That second guitar I got was just a plain old turd I dont know what was wrong with it. Im so glad you guys recomended sending it back. The third guitar is realy nice I see no reason to upgrade a thing on it. The sale price was $550 and butterscotch with a black pickguard is beautiful. Its a great deal on a telecaster I realize its not an elite or a relic telecaster. This guitar stands up on its own though, and doesnt need pickups in it. Its ready to play just the way it is. I recomend this guitar. Thanks for your opions i was just about ready to just ask for my money back I'm glad I didnt.
Thanks again
