After 20+ years of playing Strats, as per my previous thread, I now have a Tele.

This has caused some very strange side effects:-

I previously avoided anything which sounded too "Country". Now, Tele in hand, I am taking much joy in, if not actively pursuing, Country sounding licks.

Also I have a massive bruise on the right hand side of my chest. Do you become hardened to such things, like your finger tips, or is this just something I am going to have to put up with? Just asking.

I think it’s more a case of learning to ignore the pain.

I recommend getting one with a belly cut.
Makes a sizeable difference in comfort.
I don’t know if I could go back.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Kinda' like the pain in your shoulder from playing a late '70s Strat

LOL

I think you’ll find an additional side effect, John, is the visual cues. The upper bout of the Tele provides more of the neck to see than the horn of the Strat does. By a couple of frets or so. The first time you slide up past the 12th fret from having been below the 7th or so, you’ll find it looks different even though it feels right. I adjust pretty quickly but that first reach after switching from the Strat makes me second guess myself for a second or two. Knock on wood it rarely causes me to play bad notes but it does make the mind swim if only for a moment. Even after all these years it still does that to me.

On the first part... There's a law in the EU, forbidding any associating between Telecasters and country when it's not accompanied by a rock/indie/punk/heavy clausule. Perpetrators are punished with ridiculing laughter for six hours. But since you're brexiting, you may get a free ticket this one time.

On the second part, that's why they call the Tele an old man's guitar. You feel the pain, but you keep playing because you forget where it came from.
But there are solutions. Beer for natural cushioning. And long straps for knee height playing.

Thanks for the comments chaps. I'm pleased it's not just me and I like the sound of employing beer to alleviate any maladies.

With regard to the Country reference, coming from the Town of Wilco Johnson, I claim lenience on this occasion.

Strat to Tele transitioning is a very strange thing and perhaps more so as mine has the 12" Highway One neck radius (was this a 50's Original Prototype?) but I am thoroughly enjoying it.

I have been surprised how some things seem easier on the Tele and my main playing reservation, the ash tray bridge, is proving to be a big plus. I like the way it becomes a rest for the heal of your hand.

I also like the way the Tele is less intimidating to "Folk" type gatherings. Turning up with a Strat they seem to immediately assume you are some sort of Guitar Hero Wannabe. The Tele is certainly more conservative and better for Bass-Plinky-Bass-Plinky-Bass-Plinky-Bass-Bass-Bass stuff. Funny how some peoples views haven't changed in 50 years.
