I’d like to do a body repair on a 1995 (96?) American Standard 2 Color sunburst around the strap button. I got a deal on this guitar - someone set it down hard and mashed the button into the body. I’m somewhat experienced with Nitrocellulose but I believe that would not be the correct approach. What type of paint finish was used by Fender on the 1995/1996 Am Std models? Thanks

The finish used mid-nineties is urethane, both color and top coat.
But that doesn't stop you from using nitro, if you want.

Black is one of the worst colours to match if you are just touching in. So many blacks are one of 50 Shades of Grey

I think I would strip it and redo with Nitro all over.

Good catch with the 'black is black, NOT!'. Depending on the damages/extent of fixing, a full body (re)paint layer might be easiest.

On the stripping; polyurethane tolerates nitro, so the stripping (to bare wood/filler coat) is only compulsory if one wants the (very controversial) 'nitro sound'.
