Please help me out with this, friends:

I often see pictures of vintage (I mean late 50s and early 60s) sunburst telecasters with binding on the bodies... Like this:

But Fender did make them unbound back then, I mean, like this American Vintage one:

What was the "standard" back then?

Fender always built different model for same guitar.

AFAIK, Telecaster and Esquire got their "Custom" versions in 1959, so earlier ones might raise some doubts.
The neck, electronics etc; could of course have an earlier date.

Leo Fender decided that a more up-market model of his Telecaster, to compete more directly with Gibson, would be a pretty useful addition. In 1959, the rosewood board had been introduced, and then the double-bound body really made it all deluxe. Initially, it was Martin who showed Fender how to bind the bodies, as they had no experience doing it. The regular Telecasters and Esquires continued as before, but the Customs were always seen as classier, and also were more expensive.

Andy Summers and Albert Collins are the well-known Fender artists associated with the Custom Telecaster in its single coil/humbucker form.
