Hi

I've just bought a Telecaster. Was sold as a 1999 American Standard in Aquamarine Metallic. It's amazing and looks and sounds fantastic.

However, the wear on the neck makes me think it's older, and the serial number is one of those that could be a 1990 or a 1999....look:

Sorry I can't get the image to rotate...

Now, I know it's a genuine US Tele, but wanted some opinions as the Fender Website doesn't find the Serial Number. Also the logo on the headstock is silver with black surround, which makes me think again.

So I either have the 1999 Tele in Aquamarine or it's a 1990 in Gunmetal Blue - both standard colours. Either way I'm happy and it sounds sweet. The neck is amazing and the build quality is absolutely solid.

I've had the neck off and the date is hidden underneath other markings. I can just make out Nov 09 199....typical the last number is hidden. Also see ASTEL which is for American standard Telecaster

Here is the main body

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Looking a Fender support , dating ...

N9 + 5 digits are for US Vintage Series instrument made in 1990
N9 + 5 or 6 digits are 1999

Your Tele look not a Vintage Serie to me , it is a 1999
I see it on my 1999 Fender Frontline page 46
It is a American Standard with Delta Tone
Color 74 aqua marine

Thank you for your reply. It's appreciated. 1999 Aquamarine is fine by me!

Any chance you could post that p46 image to this post so I can have a look? It would be great for insurance purposes too.

For your insurance , only your own picture and / or buying proof is usefull.

No, you're jumping the lines there. The support page says "(For U.S. Vintage Series, check neck date for specific year)"; that's because they're V+ 5 or 6 digits for a very long period - including the whole nineties.

For the N9's (that applies to N9+five as well as N9+six digits), it's
Quote:
“N”-prefix serial numbers denoting the 1990s were introduced in 1990. The numbers and decals were produced far in advance, and some N9 decals (denoting 1999) were inadvertently affixed to some instruments in 1990. Consequently, some 1990 guitars bear 1999 “N9” serial numbers.

The guitar here looks legit based on those pics alone, but it might be wise to check the serial with Fender Comsumer Relations (via the support pages). They should be able to provide the original specs belonging to that serial.
A 1999, US-made, instrument should be found in the database. (I can't say if not finding it would point to pre-1993, which is the year from which Fender says they have info).

One note here: a serial number is only one part of a legit/original check.

Thanks for the info. I've emailed Fender support but yet to hear back.

I would have thought it would be there given it's supposed 1999 model. However, I've seen a few other N910xxxx serial number telecasters on other forums that the users indicate are 1990 ones based on them buying them at the time....or so they say..

I gigged with it yesterday and it's awesome, so this is just to satisfy my curiosity

Late 1990s American Series Telecasters sport a 50's spaghetti decal.

You are right , it look not a 1999 neck logo if I look carefully in my 1999 Frontline.

J Mattis may be right ....as usual

My book ( another  ) Six Decade of the Fender Telelcaster , by Tony Bacon, page 98 show a 1991 sunburst American Standard telecaster maple neck with same spaghetti logo show in Flashback_Band picture.

And with same saddles and tuning machines.

I meant jumping the lines on the support pages.
It's meant to say
E9 + 5 digits and N9 + 5 digits and N0 + 5 digits for 1990, except the V + 5 or 6 digits which belong to U.S. Vintage Series (except ’52 Telecaster).
Same system for 1999, it's N8 or N9 except for AVRIs.

That logo is why I suggested a check with Fender - the neck looks a legit Fender US neck, but something bothers me.
(What kind logo did the American Traditional series have?)
