Well, a set of Texas Specials would fit the bill to perfection.

I'm going to listen to some videos on YT featuring the TS's.

I guess they'd be appropriate since I'm from Texas.

Rio Grande, Van Zandt, Klein, Amalfitano -- lots of great pickups made right here in the Lone Star State.

Thanks for reminding me of those brand of pickups.

I hadn't thought of those, but I'm going to throw them into the mix of Tele pickups to listen to.

It's going to be a real challenge to decide which set I finally go with, but I guess that's part of the fun.

These are the same pickups used on the James Burton Standard and American Special models.

There are soooooo many pickup options nowadays.

Even just from Fender there are a ton of choices.

Texas Specials tend to be "love them or hate them" pickups. For me, I'd be more tempted to get that external battery pack and keep the EMG's than to put Tx Spl's in there.

But that's just me. Lots of people love Tx Spl's.

How much of a Tele guy are you? If you have a bunch of them (or have had a bunch of them), you probably have an idea of what you like.

If you're new to Teles, I'd suggest just a good vintage-style traditional set. Get a solid baseline idea of what Leo intended, then decide if you need hotter mid-humped varients like Tx Spl's.

Thanks for that Idea on the external battery pack idea.

I looked into it,but I'm just not sold on the idea of leaving the EMG's in.

After looking at a TON of Tele pickup videos, I've nailed it down to 3 sets.

1) Florance Nocaster
2) Fender 51 Nocaster
3) Lollar Vintage T bridge / Royal T neck

I might end up ordering 2 different sets and audition both of them in the guitar.

Still not sure yet.

There's also a "boutique" selection of pickups from James Tyler, Dr. Allen, JS Technologies, Curtis Novak and others.

I guess this is the rabbit hole guys talk about when they go crazy modding guitars.

You could actually like 10 brands of Tele pickups that sound similar, with just slight differences between them all.

This is turning out to be a little harder than I thought it'd be.

Start with the basics and try a Blackguard pickup set from the Custom Shop for an early 50's type of sound.

Thanks CF.

The Blackguard set actually sounded really good, and I hadn't even checked those out on YT yet.

One more set to consider for sure.

I don't want to take credit for the battery pack idea -- vinyl mentioned that back on the first page.

And I wasn't seriously suggesting keeping the EMG's in it. It's just that I personally would slightly prefer EMG's over Tx Spl's -- I wouldn't really want either.

(There are lots of fans of EMG's and lots of Tx Spl fans. No offense intended -- my tastes aren't any better than anyone else's.)

Those 3 sets you've tentatively picked out all have awesome reputations.

If you buy 2 of them to audition, you might end up buying another Tele so you can keep both sets.

Yes, the rabbit hole leads to a labyrinth.

A set of pickups that sound awesome in one guitar can sound "eh" in a different guitar.

The pickups that sound awesome in your guitar through your amp may sound "eh" in your guitar through a different amp.

And then with each set of pickups you try, you have to try every possible height adjustment. Sometimes a quarter turn of a height screw can be the difference between 'oooohhhhh" and "uggggghhhh".
------------------
And for all my negativity toward Tx Spl's, they might be the perfect pickups for your ears.
------------------
One thing for sure -- any pickups will sound better through an amp than a set of non-functioning, missing-battery EMG's.

Even Toneriders, GFS's, MIM STD Tele pickups. (Tonerider and GFS have lots of devoted fans -- price doesn't always correlate to satisfaction.)

BTW, besides batteries, most EMG's require special pots that won't work properly with passive pickups.

Since the EMG's worked when you tested them with an external battery, you probably have to replace the pots too.

(Another rabbit hole if you choose to fall into it. Special tapers, low friction, CTS vs Bourns -- and then cap type and cap value...)

Yep.

I've already been told by the guitar tech that's going to do the work that I'm going to need now pots and wiring.

I figured as much going in that I most likely would have to get some extra pot and such for this project.

It's worth it to me to get this guitar fully functional and sounding great with some good replacement pickups.

I think I'm going to make a decision today and get them ordered.

He thinks he can have the guitar finished by this Friday.

I guess we'll see.

Rabbit hole or not here I go.

Basics also include wiring schemes.

S-1 switches, toggles, push-pull pots, 4 & 5-way pickup selectors and modern tone circuitry generally cater for guitarists looking for more versatility in their playing style but also tend to loose the traditional "twang" you might expect from a Telecaster. Stick with a 3-way pickup switch, master volume/tone controls and avoid that fancy stuff.
