Only hardshells for me.

If you love your guitars, protect them properly--use a hardshell case when you travel.

My classical had a pressboard (basically thick cardboard) case & when I slipped on some ice it came crashing down & the headstock broke off.

Fortunately a guitar repairing friend fixed it for free, and it plays very well.
I got a hardshell case for it--and no more problems.

That sucks. I use a gig bag, but only for when I go on trips back to visit family, and when I will be nearby by it at all times, otherwise its hardshells.

Yeah i use a gigbag- but now that i've heard your stories i'll be more careful. I don't tavel far (Is south Western Long Island to Brooklyn far?) so i put the gig bag in the back seat. No biggy if i damage my bullet strat, right? :) I don't care if my guitars scratch- like em that way, makes em look used and older. LOL im weird

Scratches are one thing--all my guitars have some, but cracks, large dings, broken headstocks, etc--now that's a whole other thing.

I just put a small crack in the finish on my new Telecaster and its driving me nuts, 'cause I'm still paying it off.

Just bought a brand new 70s reissue Strat that came in a gig bag and even if you put the guitar in it, when you zipper it up, those zippers can even scratch the side of the guitar without you even realizing. You don't even have to go anywhere with it. Immediately bought a genuine Fender Hardshell case right away.

I wish I'd bought the Fender case.

My hardshell was the one made by the store, Steve's Music.

I got a gig bag with my PRS, the first thing I did was to buy a hard case. I wouldn't trust a gig bag as far as I could throw one, all my guitars are in hard case's. Sad story all the same from the OP, must have been a real bummer.

I had the same experience with a new Kramer guitar back in the late 80's. It was my first new guitar, and I had saved up a long time to purchase it.

It came with a gigbag. I didn't own it 5 minutes when I walked through a doorway with the gigbag slung over my shoulder. The bag hit the edge of the door frame and put a nasty old gouge right in the front of the guitar. I was heartbroken.

But at least I learned my lesson early on.

Morale to the story. Just say no to gig bags.

I always figure if I'm spending $400 + on a guitar then it's worth dropping an extra $100 to protect your instrument.

Sorry to hear about your bad fortune. Be glad the damage wasn't worse than it is. Some people even have a relic job done on their guitar to give it some personality. You will likly be telling that story for a long time, but it will get easier to laugh about after some time passes.

i've always had the good sense to have cases, even cheap ones, for my guitars. i have a musicians friend hardshell for my squier strat but i have an skb for my schecter. i've heard people say that skb casses are indestructable and i have yet to prove that wrong.

i have one gigbag for my bass because sometimes i just can't carry a guitar case, bass, and an amp.

Uhgh.. It's just a pain in the rear for that kind of thing to happen. But you know, I have a hard Road Runner and it's been good so far. So... I've gotten over it I guess.

You know if you were to contact Fender and complain that the gigbag failed and resluted in damage, you might be able to come to some sort of agreement.
