I just bought a F. Telecaster in sunburst... but, since it was a mexican standard, it came with a thin, cheap gigbag. Now, I love the guitar so much... but I decided to bring it to town yesterday... and a strap broke at Carl's Junior when I was taking the backstraps off. I was hoping the other strap wouldn't fall off, but while riding my bike, my strap fell off. My tele tumbled the four (or so) feet to the ground... and got an inch long to a centimeter wide chip in the paint. There is another chip right by the neck, which makes it seem like the neck fell towards it and took it off, and some big(ish) scratches on the headstock (which you can't see, but you can definetely feel).
Moral of the story, don't use the gigbag that the MIM tele/strat comes with.

That well and truly sucks man. Another sad story: the singer of my old band had a lovely Gibson LP Studio and that came with a hard case, it fell over and cos the head part fell hanging off a step with the rest of the guitar flat the head came clean off, got it repaired but nowhere near the same guitar!

I've never trusted the gig bags. Even the more costly ones, that seem to have a lot of padding.

Two of my guitars came with a gig bag. In each case, I immediately bought a SKB hard case for them. I often drive my guitars between two locations, that are 150 miles apart. There have been numerous times, while driving, that I've had to slam the brakes very hard, this caused my guitars (in the back seat) to fly forward and hit the backs of the front seats and slide onto the floorboard. So far........not even a scratch. So the hard cases are well worth the money to me.

The gig bag that came with my strat didn't even make it from the store to the car before the clip broke and the guitar smashed to the ground. Fortunatly the store replaced both the guitar and the gig bag.

Gig bags seem okay for going short distances in and out of cars, but a case is worth it for the extra protection that it provides, especially if you have a truly favorite instrument that you're moving around.

I'm sorry to hear about your gig bag experience.

Yeah, thanks guys. I have a friend that had some body work needed on his Dean acoustic. The shop he went to fixed it for twenty dollars. I think I'll go to them and get it up to par.

The Nashville Tele I recently bought came with a gig bag. I upgraded as I was ordering it to a hard case. I won't carry ANY of my guitars in a gig bag.

Man...that sucks about the gig bag and your Tele. Hardshells are definitely the way to go (although I still use my TKL gig bag on occasion).

Yep... I made the mistake of using a gigbag with a Custom Shop '65 Relic Strat(It was my first gig and I was running late... Don't judge me!). I too was in the car with the guitar in the trunk of an suv. Well, in any case, the gigbag's zipper slowly slipped down and exposed the headstock and neck of the guitar. My friend took an unecessary sharp turn and the headstock got caught in between a seat. He took a few more turns, and by the end of the trip I was sure the guitar was going to be damaged. Sure enough, I went to the back to get the guitar and the neck was almost completely separated from the headstock. I had the guitar fixed, but it never played the same again. Boy, I realize just how stupid I am every time I retell the story. I also wonder why I used a friggin' Relic Strat as a performance guitar...

I use gig bags for all of my Fenders. I have invested in the road runner super high end gig bags with plenty of the right padding and good strong straps. When I am travelling, I do use my hard cases. I have never trusted any of the cheap gig bags that come with an axe. I usually just say no thanks, you can keep it, I have enough good luggage to transport any guitar I have.

 I've just read this entire thread... Oh man, I feel so sad now. Never bought or used a gig bag. But now I feel guilty to say, listening to your stories, I never will consider one now. It's like profitting from your misery. But I thank you all.

 :( :(

Thats not good to hear man, real unfortunate.

Before I had my Telecaster put in a package for the trip home, I told them to keep the gig bag, and put a hardshell case on the bill. They gave me a discount of whatever the gig bag cost. :)

Sorry to hear about that, mac67.

I usually keep my guitars in gigbags when they're at home, but I always use a hard case when I take them out.
