I purchased a Fender Standard Telecaster the last week of November. This was my first guitar...just learning to play.

About two weeks ago I reached Power Chords(a5...etc). Started having string buzz and rattling.

No luthier in my town so I found a Fender Authorized Repair center about 80 miles away..I had never had a proper setup done on the guitar so I figured a good setup and I would be good to go.

So they worked on it for about an hour and discovered that the 4th, 5th, & 6th frets were LOWER than the rest of the frets. At first they said it was going to have to have a complete fret job.

After I told them I had just had the guitar barely two months they said this was a manufacturer defect and would be covered under warranty.

They said they would have to send it off to get the fret work done. The frets would either have to be replaced or all others lowered to match those three.

Seems like a pretty major repair for a brand new guitar.

I purchased at Sweetwater so while I was there I called them and asked if getting the guitar replaced was an option. I was told it was but that I would have to call back Monday to find out for sure. The person wasn't there that could tell me.

I did look at Sweetwaters return policy and it says can return for replacement on first 30 days. So now I am worried this might not happen.

They told me at reapir shop the three slots had probably been routes too low. If I can't actually get the guitar replaced it looks to me like the better solution would be to replace the entire neck.

What do you think should happen.

You should get a new guitar, your money back or get that one fixed for free.

First thing is find another repair shop as this is complete BS. The frets sit on their shoulders not on the tang in the groove.

A fret level is no big job, that you could do yourself, (if this is indeed the issue) so again casts doubt on the competence of the "repair shop".

A replacement neck isn't just a matter of unbolting one and putting on the replacement as the nut grooves will need cutting and the tension will need setting among other things. A fret level isn't as fiddly.

I agree,
Is it late for 30 days exchange.?.... :(

Look this "luthier" is not a luthier, I'll see a qualified one for another opinion if exchange do not work.

Insist with Sweetwater for an exchange by arguing that you are a beginner in guitar and that it is not your fault if you realized the problem a little past 30 days.
Prepare your arguments to win.

As a beginner, over the next few months (?) You will buy other guitars from them, accessories, an amp ...

Sweetwater I have found pretty easy to work with for all types of issues. Not saying they do things perfectly but I haven't had an issue yet they didn't work to resolve. Talk to your sales rep that sold you your guitar before you do anything else. For me that has been a key as they want return business and mine has followed up to make sure I am happy.

AFAIK, that aforementioned 30 days return time is the limit for their "no questions asked" policy, and it has nothing to do with defective goods repair/return rights.
